A few days ago, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) leader OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman published a blog post in which he spoke about the future of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.

This included the phenomenon of AGI or artificial general intelligence, which is a technology that allows machines to work and think like humans do and is the level that comes after GenAI.

This was at the same time as OpenAI’s first-ever television advertisement that aired during the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The ad spoke about humanity’s greatest inventions—such as the discovery of fire, the wheel, the internet, etc.—and ultimately ended on OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Coming back to the blog, Sam Altman spoke about the company rolling out AI agents that could perform a wide range of jobs that are currently executed by junior engineers.

“Let’s imagine the case of a software engineering agent, which is an agent that we expect to be particularly important,” read the blog post. “Imagine that this agent will eventually be capable of doing most things a software engineer at a top company with a few years of experience could do, for tasks up to a couple of days long.”

However, this vision is not just for one agent, but rather a workforce of agents, where some are good at a certain set of tasks, but bad at another set.

“Still, imagine it as a real-but-relatively-junior virtual coworker. Now imagine 1,000 of them. Or 1 million of them. Now imagine such agents in every field of knowledge work.”

Either way, such a move would reignite the debate about GenAI taking jobs and its overall impact on the workforce of businesses.

In all fairness, Altman also spoke about the limitations of the technology as they may not be able to perform at the levels that humans could.

To this, Altman said, “It will not have the biggest new ideas, it will require lots of human supervision and direction, and it will be great at some things but surprisingly bad at others.”

So, the debate about job replacement might be a moot point. Instead, jobs may just shift from executive menial engineering tasks to managing and supervising them.

While this shift might be relieving for workers, a study by Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon University raises other concerns.

Titled ‘The Impact of Generative AI on Critical Thinking: Self-Reported Reductions in Cognitive Effort and Confidence Effects From a Survey of Knowledge Workers’, the study finds that the rapid adoption of GenAI tools could be resulting in depleting cognitive abilities and critical thinking skills.

The researchers surveyed 319 knowledge workers across various professions such as Computers and Mathematical; Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media; Office and Administrative Support; Business and Financial Operations; and Educational Instruction and Library.

Through the survey, the workers shared three examples of how they use GenAI in their daily tasks, and provided examples for each task type (creation, information, and advice) to diversify the examples collected. This resulted in a collection of 936 first-hand examples of using GenAI in work tasks.

Furthermore, they were asked about their confidence levels in finishing tasks when assisted by GenAI and when without. From this survey, the researchers noted that “higher confidence in GenAI is associated with less critical thinking, while higher self-confidence is associated with more critical thinking.”

It was also noted that OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot were the most-used tools, along with DALL-E.

Essentially, the workers said they felt more confident when using GenAI tools—a move that helps them boost productivity but one that comes with the trade-off of lower cognitive abilities and critical thinking skills.

Do you think GenAI technology will replace human jobs? Do you think businesses will find a need to hire employees with critical thinking skills to overcome the side effects of GenAI technology?
