Spotify’s Kids And Family Music Toggle Keeps Wrapped And Recommendations Personal

For parents sharing Spotify with the household, playing the same animated movie song or nursery rhyme repeatedly no longer has to convince Spotify that it represents their actual music taste.

Spotify’s new setting lets users exclude kids and family music from their taste profile while continuing to search for, stream, and create playlists using that content. Once switched off, music such as animated movie soundtracks, family TV theme songs, nursery rhymes, and other children-focused tracks will stop shaping personalized recommendations.

The feature is rolling out globally on mobile to Spotify Free and Premium users. However, kids and family music will remain included in the taste profile by default, meaning users who want it excluded will have to manually disable the setting.

That distinction matters in homes where TVs, smart speakers, cars, or other shared devices are connected to a parent’s account.

Even families with separate accounts for children can end up streaming kids’ music through a parent’s profile on communal devices, which can influence Spotify’s understanding of that listener’s preferences.
 

 

Spotify Makes The Kids Music Exclusion Retroactive For Wrapped

Perhaps the more useful part of the update is that Spotify is not only fixing recommendations going forward.

The change applies retroactively. Once kids and family music is excluded, tracks already streamed in that category will no longer count toward Wrapped results such as a user’s top song or artist. The same listening will also stop influencing experiences including Discover Weekly and Daily Mix.

Spotify already allowed listeners to exclude individual tracks and playlists from their taste profiles. The new toggle makes that process considerably broader by removing the influence of the entire kids and family music category with one setting instead of requiring users to manage content individually.

It also complements Spotify’s managed accounts for younger listeners. Those accounts give children aged 13 and under, or the equivalent age in their region, their own music library and Wrapped experience alongside parental controls.
 

 

How To Exclude Kids And Family Music From Your Spotify Taste Profile

Users can activate the feature from Spotify’s mobile app by opening Settings and privacy from their profile picture, selecting Content and display, and switching off “Include kids and family music in taste profile.”

Spotify says the resulting changes may take up to 48 hours to appear in personalized recommendations. After that, parents can continue playing their children’s favorites without those listening sessions rewriting what Spotify thinks they personally want to hear next.
