Spotify Adds AI Persona Badges To Exclude Labeled Artists From Recommendations

Overall Rating

Spotify is introducing AI Persona badges for artist profiles that represent AI-generated identities, while excluding labeled artists from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default as the streaming platform moves to make it clearer whether listeners are encountering a real person.

TL;DR

  • Spotify will begin displaying AI Persona badges from mid-September.
  • Artists can self-disclose, while Spotify can also review and label profiles independently.
  • Labeled artists will be excluded from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default.
  • The badge identifies an AI-generated public persona, not whether the music itself was created using AI.

Spotify announced the new system recently, saying listeners had expressed frustration about encountering artist profiles that appear to represent real people before discovering they were AI-generated identities. The badges will appear on artist profiles, in Search and alongside tracks in playlists starting in mid-September.

TechCrunch reported that artists can begin identifying themselves as AI Personas through Spotify for Artists immediately. However, Spotify will not depend solely on voluntary disclosure and plans to review profiles whose names and imagery appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities.

Spotify Will Keep AI Personas Out Of Recommendations By Default

The bigger change goes beyond labeling.

Spotify says music from AI Personas will not be included by default in its editorial or algorithmic recommendations. This also covers personalized recommendations, although users who intentionally engage with an AI Persona, such as by following the artist, may still receive its music in recommendations.

Quartz highlighted the same distinction, noting that Spotify treats following an AI Persona as an intentional signal of interest. The publication also reported that affected artists will be notified when Spotify applies the designation and will have the option to accept the classification or appeal it.

Firstpost similarly framed the development around two central changes, labeling AI-generated artist identities and excluding their music from recommendations.

Spotify will initially prioritize profiles that have crossed defined audience thresholds, allowing its review system to cover a large share of the artist pages listeners actually visit. In the coming months, listeners will also be given a way to report profiles they believe should carry an AI Persona badge.

AI Persona Does Not Mean The Music Was Made By AI

There is an important distinction in Spotify's policy.

An AI Persona badge concerns the identity presented by an artist profile, including its name and visual representation. It does not automatically mean that every song released through the profile was generated using artificial intelligence.

Spotify already has separate tools for disclosing how AI was involved in music production, including AI Credits and SongDNA. The company says tens of thousands of AI credits are being submitted daily, while its Verified by Spotify system now covers hundreds of thousands of profiles representing more than 99% of artists that listeners actively search for on the platform.

This distinction matters because Spotify is not introducing a blanket ban on AI-assisted music. Instead, the latest measure targets transparency around artist identity and the recommendation advantage available to profiles presenting themselves as musicians.

Spotify Steps Up Its Fight Against AI Spam And Fake Artists

The Guardian reported that Spotify removed 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period as streaming platforms dealt with an increasing volume of low-quality and artificial content. It also pointed to AI-created act The Velvet Sundown as an example of the uncertainty listeners have faced when trying to determine whether an artist is real.

The AI Persona badge now turns that broader position into a visible product policy. Rather than removing AI identities from Spotify entirely, the company is giving listeners clearer information about who, or what, is behind a profile while limiting the automatic discovery benefits those profiles receive.
