Overall Rating
For years, Spotify has been steadily expanding far beyond music streaming. From podcasts to audiobooks, the platform has been building itself into a broader audio destination. Now, the company is experimenting with another format that could change how people consume long-form journalism on the go.

TL;DR

  • Spotify adds narrated magazine articles with 650+ stories from major publications.
  • Premium users can listen via audiobook allowance while others can buy per article.
  • The company is testing a new audio format that turns long-form journalism into narrated listening experiences.

Spotify is introducing narrated long-form magazine articles, bringing more than 650 English-language stories to listeners in markets where audiobooks are available. The collection includes content from major publications such as Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, WIRED, Billboard, and Vanity Fair. Each article is narrated by Spotify Audiobooks’ in-house production team and runs for under two hours.

Premium users can access the narrated articles through their monthly audiobook allowance, while free users can purchase individual articles for $1.99 each.

“With Articles, we’re introducing long-form journalism in audio as a natural extension of the music, podcasts, and audiobooks people already come to Spotify for, focused on topics we know they love. By bringing shorter form content into the mix, we’re meeting audiences where they are to help build healthy listening habits, ultimately growing engagement with books over time,” said Colleen Prendergast, Licensing Lead at Spotify Audiobooks.

Spotify says the feature is designed to make long-form content feel more approachable for listeners who may not regularly engage with books or lengthy written articles. The company also believes its recommendation and personalization tools can help publishers reach audiences who are more likely to engage with their stories.

The launch adds to Spotify’s growing audiobook push. The company says it has expanded audiobooks into 22 markets since launch, reached millions of new readers, and increased listening hours by 60% year over year.

This latest addition shows how Spotify is building itself into a broader audio platform, where stories, music, and spoken word content come together in one place.
