Sony Hikes PlayStation 5 Prices For The Second Time In A Year!

Overall Rating
Buying a gaming console used to feel like a one-time investment that only got better with time, especially as prices gradually became more affordable. New models would arrive, but older ones typically became easier on the wallet and make gaming more accessible to a wider audience. That pattern, however, is beginning to change as shifting tech priorities and supply pressures start to influence even the gaming industry.

TL;DR

  • Sony Increases PlayStation 5 Prices Worldwide Due to Higher Costs.
  • Rising AI Demand Is Reducing Chip Supply for Gaming Devices.
  • Expensive Consoles May Slow Down Gaming Sales.

Sony Group is raising prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles again, marking its second increase in under a year. From April 2, the standard PS5 in the U.S. will cost $649.99, up from $549.99. The Digital Edition will be priced at $599.99, while the PS5 Pro will go up to $899.99. The PlayStation Portal will also see a price increase to $249.99 from $199.99.

The main reason behind this change is the rising cost of key components, especially memory chips. With the rapid growth of AI, chipmakers are focusing more on supplying data centers, where margins are higher. This has reduced the availability of chips for consumer products like gaming consoles, pushing up costs.

Sony said the decision follows a “careful evaluation” of ongoing cost pressures in global supply chains. Similar price increases are expected in Europe and Japan.

The hike comes at a time when PS5 sales are already slowing. During the October-December holiday quarter, sales fell 16% year-on-year to 8 million units. Analysts believe higher prices could further impact demand. Epic Games also recently pointed to weak console sales as one of the reasons behind its 1,000 job cuts.

Sony is not the only company taking this step. Microsoft raised prices of its Xbox consoles last year, suggesting this may be part of a wider trend.

As investments in AI continue to grow, their impact is now being felt beyond enterprise tech, reaching everyday consumer products like gaming consoles.
