Samsung Electronics is ready to take on Apple and Meta in the extended reality (XR) headset market with the launch of its Galaxy XR, which was first demonstrated last year.

According to the company, the device is built on an open, scalable platform with multimodal AI at its core, and “marks the beginning of the Android XR ecosystem, unleashing a future of discovery, play, and work.”

Said to be a new category of AI-native devices, it’s the first product built on the new Android XR platform developed together by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm Technologies, which also means it comes with Gemini—Google’s prized artificial intelligence model—embedded right from the start.

This allows it to feel like a new type of AI companion that helps users manage tasks through natural and intuitive interactions spanning voice, vision, and gesture. This is enhanced by its ability to understand users’ surroundings by “seeing what they see and hearing what they hear.”

The Galaxy XR is powered by Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform; comes with 16GB memory and 256GB storage; Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth v5.4, a 3,552 x 3,840 display resolution with 29 million pixels on a Micro-OLED screen with 60Hz, 72Hz (Default), 90Hz refresh rates; a video playing resolution of 7680 x 4320 at 60fps with UHD 8K capability; 3D Photo & video capture (6.5MP) and iris recognition; vision correction; two 2-way speakers (woofer + tweeter); and six microphones array.

Its sensors span two high-resolution pass-through cameras, six world-facing tracking cameras, four eye-tracking cameras, five inertial measurement units (IMUs), one depth sensor, and one flicker sensor.

Its battery supports up to 2 hours of general use and video watching up to 2.5 hours but can be used while charging the battery.

It weighs 545 grams but may vary depending on the use of other attachments such as cushion size adjusters and light shields.

Galaxy XR is available for at $1,799.99, while the Galaxy XR Travel Case and Galaxy XR Controller cost $249.99 each. Customers purchasing the product by the end of 2025 will also gain the exclusive benefits of The Explorer Pack, which is worth more than $1,000.

The Samsung-Google-Qualcomm co-developed Android XR ecosystem was built as part of a long-term vision for XR that’s designed to scale across a variety of form factors, from headsets to AI glasses and beyond.

Galaxy XR provides a wide range of experiences optimized for XR, spanning sports, gaming, video editing, and other immersive experiences, as well as across applications such as Google Maps, YouTube, Circle to Search, and Google Photos, all enhanced with Google’s Gemini.

Here, users can use Gemini as a guide to navigate to any place on Google Maps and gain personalized suggestions about nearby places; ask Gemini to source specific content on YouTube and information about that content; leverage its Circle to Search capabilities; and view 2D photos and videos with added depth and dimension.

“Built on Android XR, Galaxy XR expands the vision for mobile AI into a new frontier of immersive and meaningful possibilities, allowing XR to move from concept to everyday reality, for both the industry and users,” said Won-Joon Choi, COO of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics.

“Android XR is the first Android platform built entirely for the Gemini era, and we are incredibly excited to take a significant leap forward today with the launch of Galaxy XR,” said Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google.

“Galaxy XR embodies our vision for the future, where the synergy of AI and XR transforms the possibilities of personal computing,” said Alex Katouzian, Group GM of Mobile, Compute & XR at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

Samsung also plans to release smart glasses soon.

Ahead of this, Samsung also announced the launch of the first-ever Perplexity AI-powered TV app, simply called Perplexity TV App.

It offers users new, innovative, and personalized AI-powered experiences that can help them quickly find what they’re looking for, as well as boost Samsung’s Vision AI Companion, which brings smart, generative AI support to screens.

Samsung’s Vision AI Companion integrates the company’s most advanced AI features into a single, intuitive AI experience.

“Samsung continually brings innovative and first-to-market experiences to our device owners, and this partnership with Perplexity is the latest that will deliver cutting-edge AI technology, redefining how Samsung owners interact with their TVs,” said Dan Glassman, Senior Director & Head of New Business Development for Samsung Electronics.

The Perplexity TV App will be available on all 2025 Samsung TVs, with models from 2023 and 2024 getting access with the latest OS upgrade later this year.

What do you think about Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset? Do you think it will perform better than Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest Series?
