Quantum Computing: IBM & AMD Partner Up As Japan Launches A Homegrown Machine

As the world continues to marvel at artificial intelligence (AI) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies, not all tech conglomerates find themselves ahead of the curve.

Yet these giants aren’t necessarily out of all technology races—in fact, they’re not far behind in the most popular one doing the headline rounds.

Keeping to this thought, IBM and AMD, two prominent names in the technology industry, announced that they are partnering to develop next-generation computing architectures by combining quantum computers and high-performance computing—their specialties—to develop a super-powerful machine known as quantum-centric supercomputing.

IBM is known for developing the world's most performant quantum computers and software, while AMD brings in experience and expertise in enabling high-performance computing and building AI accelerators, AKA GPUs (graphics processing units).

GPUs have become a central peripheral of the AI race, leading sector leader NVIDIA to shoot up in prominence and even hit a market capitalization of $4 trillion—the first publicly traded company to do so.

Quantum-centric supercomputing architectures consist of quantum computers working in tandem with powerful high-performance computing and AI infrastructure, which includes CPUs, GPUs, and other compute engines, allowing for hybrid use based on diverse cases.

As such, the two companies will look to integrate AMD CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs with IBM quantum computers to enable a new class of emerging algorithms outside current capabilities. Furthermore, AMD is set to offer real-time error correction capabilities, which are a crucial component for fault-tolerant quantum computing.

The two are planning an initial demonstration later this year and will also explore how open-source ecosystems could catalyze the development and adoption of new algorithms using quantum-centric supercomputing.

Quantum computers can represent and process information in a way that classic computers can’t match up, allowing scientists and researchers to make unprecedented breakthroughs in fields such as drug discovery, materials discovery, optimization, and logistics.

“Quantum computing will simulate the natural world and represent information in an entirely new way,” said Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO, IBM. “By exploring how quantum computers from IBM and the advanced high-performance compute technologies of AMD can work together, we will build a powerful hybrid model that pushes past the limits of traditional computing.”

“High-performance computing is the foundation for solving the world's most important challenges,” said Dr. Lisa Su, Chair and CEO of AMD. “As we partner with IBM to explore the convergence of high-performance computing and quantum technologies, we see tremendous opportunities to accelerate discovery and innovation.”

This move follows one that recently transpired on the other side of the world.

In Japan, the University of Osaka’s Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology (QIQB) unveiled a superconducting quantum computer that’s fully designed and built with homegrown components and software.

Furthermore, people visiting Expo 2025 (held in Osaka, Kansai) could interact with the machine through a dedicated exhibit.

According to the news release announcing the launch, the project was led by QIQB and witnessed participation from RIKEN and other Japanese companies, such as ULVAC, ULVAC CRYOGENICS, e-trees.Japan, QuEL, QunaSys, Systems Engineering Consultants, TIS, and Fujitsu.

The group replaced previously imported components, such as the dilution refrigerator and pulse tube refrigerator, with locally built ones, and even developed the entire software ecosystem, from front-end to back-end, while also making it open-source.

“This project demonstrates Japan’s comprehensive mastery of the different technologies required for quantum computer manufacturing and system integration,” reads an excerpt from the release.
