Peter Steinberger, the creator of viral AI personal assistant OpenClaw, has joined OpenAI in a strategic talent move that underscores the company’s accelerating push into agentic AI. Steinberger confirmed the decision in a blog post, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also announcing the hire publicly.

TL;DR

  • OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger has joined OpenAI.
  • He will help drive the next generation of personal AI agents.
  • OpenClaw will transition into a foundation-backed open-source project supported by OpenAI.
  • Steinberger says joining OpenAI is the fastest way to create global impact.

Steinberger, an Austrian developer, said the decision was rooted in impact rather than scale. While he acknowledged that OpenClaw could have evolved into a large standalone company, he emphasized that building a traditional venture-backed business was not his primary goal.

“I might have been able to turn OpenClaw into a huge company,” Steinberger wrote in his announcement. “It’s not really exciting for me. What I want is to change the world, not build a large company, and teaming up with OpenAI is the fastest way to bring this to everyone.”

Sam Altman confirmed the hire on X, stating that Steinberger will “drive the next generation of personal agents” at OpenAI. While specific responsibilities were not disclosed, the wording suggests a leadership role focused on product innovation and agent-based AI systems.

OpenClaw, previously known as Clawdbot and later Moltbot, gained rapid visibility in recent weeks by positioning itself as “the AI that actually does things.” Unlike conventional chat-based assistants that primarily generate text responses, OpenClaw was built around execution. The assistant could manage calendars, book flights, interact with social media platforms, and coordinate with other AI agents to complete multi-step tasks.

The project also underwent branding changes during its growth. Its original name, Clawdbot, was altered after Anthropic reportedly raised concerns about similarities to its Claude model. The assistant was briefly renamed Moltbot before ultimately becoming OpenClaw, a name Steinberger said he preferred.

Under the new arrangement, OpenClaw will not be discontinued. Instead, Altman clarified that it will “live in a foundation as an open source project that OpenAI will continue to support.” This foundation-backed structure allows community development to continue while benefiting from OpenAI’s technical and financial backing.

The move aligns closely with OpenAI’s broader strategy around agentic AI. Over the past year, the company has expanded capabilities in tool usage, memory systems, and multi-step reasoning, positioning its models to move beyond conversational outputs toward autonomous task execution.

Agent-based systems represent a major frontier in artificial intelligence, where models are designed not only to answer questions but to plan, act, and execute across digital environments. Steinberger’s experience building an execution-focused assistant directly complements this direction.

As competition intensifies in the personal AI assistant space, OpenAI’s recruitment of independent builders signals a consolidation of talent around scalable agent platforms. With OpenClaw transitioning into an open-source foundation model and Steinberger joining OpenAI’s ranks, the company appears to be doubling down on building AI systems capable of performing real-world digital tasks at scale.
