Overall Rating

OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5.5 Instant as the new default model for ChatGPT, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant, as the company looks to deliver faster, more accurate, and more personalized AI interactions for everyday users.

The launch comes as competition in the artificial intelligence market continues to intensify, with companies such as Google, Anthropic, and Meta rapidly upgrading their generative AI offerings and assistant platforms.

TL;DR

  • OpenAI launched GPT-5.5 Instant as ChatGPT’s new default model.
  • The company says it reduces hallucinations by 52.5% in high-stakes areas.
  • The model offers faster responses with improved personalization and memory handling.
  • GPT-5.5 Instant is now available to all logged-in ChatGPT users.
  • OpenAI also introduced new transparency controls for memory usage.

OpenAI has officially introduced GPT-5.5 Instant, a new default artificial intelligence model for ChatGPT that focuses on improving factual accuracy, response quality, and personalization while maintaining low latency for everyday use.

The launch follows the recent introduction of the broader GPT-5.5 family, which brought upgrades in coding, reasoning, multimodal processing, and research capabilities. GPT-5.5 Instant, however, is positioned specifically as the model for day-to-day ChatGPT interactions where users expect speed alongside reliability.

According to OpenAI, the new model significantly cuts hallucinations, especially in sensitive areas such as medicine, finance, and law. Internal evaluations published by the company revealed that GPT-5.5 Instant generated 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims compared to GPT-5.3 Instant during high-stakes prompts.

The company also said the model reduced inaccurate claims by 37.3% in difficult conversations previously flagged by users for factual issues. OpenAI added that the updated system performs better in image analysis, STEM-focused queries, technical writing, and web-search decision-making while producing shorter and more concise answers.

Because Instant is the daily driver for hundreds of millions of people, small improvements make a big difference, OpenAI said in its official announcement. The company added that the update makes everyday interactions more useful and more enjoyable.

The company further noted that GPT-5.5 Instant adopts a more natural conversational style while improving responsiveness across complex requests. OpenAI said the model is also better at following instructions and maintaining consistency during long conversations.

Another major focus of the release is personalization. GPT-5.5 Instant can now better utilize saved memories, previous chats, uploaded files, and connected services such as Gmail to tailor responses for users.

To address privacy concerns, OpenAI introduced new memory sources controls that allow users to review, update, delete, or disconnect stored context used by ChatGPT. The company said these controls are designed to provide greater transparency regarding how personalization works inside the chatbot.

The rollout has already started for all logged-in ChatGPT users, while advanced personalization features are initially being made available to Plus and Pro subscribers on the web before expanding to mobile and additional subscription tiers. OpenAI also confirmed that GPT-5.3 Instant will remain available for approximately three months before being retired.

The release reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy of making ChatGPT more dependable and practical for everyday productivity, education, and professional workflows. As AI assistants increasingly become integrated into workplace software, browsers, and mobile devices, companies are now competing heavily on reliability, personalization, and trust rather than just raw model performance.
