OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, offering eligible faculty members and postdoctoral researchers at selected institutions 12 months of complimentary access to GPT-5.6 and other frontier AI tools through dedicated research workspaces.

OpenAI is putting its most capable artificial intelligence models into the hands of scientists, mathematicians and engineers through a new initiative called ChatGPT for Academic Researchers.
The program will initially cover 10,000 researchers during summer 2026 before expanding to 100,000 participants through 2027. Access is already available at institutions including the Institute for Advanced Study and École normale supérieure.
Participants will receive complimentary access for 12 months through a dedicated ChatGPT workspace. Each workspace can support a verified team of up to five people, consisting of the approved researcher and as many as four collaborators from the same institution.
Who Qualifies For OpenAI’s Research Program?
The initial program is intended for faculty members and postdoctoral researchers conducting active work across science, mathematics and engineering.
Applicants must be affiliated with a recognized, degree-granting college or university with a high level of research activity. OpenAI has clarified that the initiative is limited to selected academic institutions rather than being immediately available to every researcher or university.
Researchers must sign in using an institutional email address, verify their affiliation through SheerID and share a qualifying research paper. They must also provide a short description explaining how they intend to use ChatGPT for scientific research.
Approved applicants complete a $0 checkout using a valid payment card before creating their workspace. Collaborators must separately verify their institutional affiliations, and every invited collaborator counts toward the program’s target of 100,000 accounts.
Institutions that already use ChatGPT Edu can participate, although approved access will be coordinated through the institution’s existing workspace. OpenAI also clarified that the program covers ChatGPT access and does not provide API credits.

What Researchers Receive
Participants will gain access to OpenAI’s frontier models across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, including the GPT-5.6 family at launch.
The package includes GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, expanded deep research capabilities, larger context windows and higher usage limits. OpenAI says the workspaces also include business-grade privacy and security protections, with participant data excluded from model training by default.
Researchers can use Codex to write and debug code, analyze datasets and create reproducible research workflows. ChatGPT Work can support longer projects involving literature reviews, grant applications, manuscript preparation and the communication of research findings.
The platform also offers more than 75 life science skills covering areas such as genetics, genomics, sequencing, single-cell analysis, protein modeling and drug discovery. Connectors can link researchers with scientific literature, public genomic and clinical databases, computational notebooks, satellite imagery, data platforms and reference-management tools.
OpenAI said, “The benefits of frontier AI should not be concentrated in a few companies and well-resourced labs.”
OpenAI Expands Its Scientific Research Push
The company says roughly 1.3 million people use ChatGPT for advanced science and mathematics every week, generating approximately 8.4 million messages.
Researchers within the top 20% of AI usage in their respective fields are also nearly twice as likely to assign AI tasks estimated to require four hours or longer. Such tasks account for nearly 7% of their requests, compared with 3.5% among other researchers in the same field.
OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol scored 83% on FrontierMath Tier 4, compared with 72.5% for GPT-5.5. GPT-5.6 Sol Pro also solved 31.5% of tasks on GeneBench Pro, which tests complex biological data analysis and scientific reasoning.
ChatGPT for Academic Researchers forms part of OpenAI’s commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research. That broader commitment includes the company’s $50 million NextGenAI initiative and its work with the US Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission.
Applications opened on July 29, 2026, although acceptance will depend on the researcher’s role, institutional eligibility, verified affiliation and proposed scientific use.
