Overall Rating

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience for users aged 13 to 17 that combines stronger default safety controls with Study Mode, homework reminders, break prompts and parental tools as scrutiny around minors’ use of AI chatbots intensifies.

The timing is notable because teenagers have already been using ChatGPT for schoolwork, everyday questions and emotional support for years. TechCrunch framed the release around that delay, while Euronews, The Wall Street Journal and BBC focused on the new guardrails around learning, emotional reliance and human-like behavior.

TL;DR

  • ChatGPT for Teens automatically applies to users aged 13 to 17 or those OpenAI estimates are under 18, with stronger protections around self-harm, violence, eating disorders and or romantic content.
  • Study Mode, responsible homework reminders, quizzes and Study Hours are designed to encourage learning rather than answer-dumping.
  • Parents can use Quiet Hours and safety alerts, while The Wall Street Journal reports age prediction uses roughly 2,000 signals and teens receive regular break reminders.

ChatGPT For Teens Puts Safety Guardrails On By Default

OpenAI says users who identify themselves as 13 to 17, or whom its systems estimate are under 18, will automatically be placed into ChatGPT for Teens. The company says the experience applies stronger protections around self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, or explicit content.

The product also brings together Study Mode, responsible homework reminders, quizzes, learning visualizations and Study Hours. OpenAI says the goal is to guide students through problems rather than simply hand over an answer, summarizing its approach with, “AI should support learning, not shortcut it.”

TechCrunch highlighted the same learning features but raised an unresolved question about how difficult the safeguards will be for determined teenagers to work around. In other words, the effectiveness of the teen experience will depend not only on its default rules but also on how well age detection and enforcement perform outside controlled testing.

OpenAI Is Trying To Make ChatGPT Feel Less Human

The safety changes also target emotional dependence. OpenAI’s under-18 rules say ChatGPT should not use romantic language, encourage emotional dependence or imply that it has feelings or consciousness, while break reminders are intended to encourage teenagers to step away from the chatbot.

BBC centered its reporting on this effort to make ChatGPT feel less human-like for younger users. Euronews similarly reported that the teen version is prevented from suggesting it has personal feelings, with OpenAI Vice President of Global Policy Ann O’Leary saying the goal is to “make sure that this is safe, even if you don't use parental controls.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that ChatGPT for Teens includes break reminders and stronger protections against emotional dependence. It also cited O’Leary as saying nine out of 10 teens who use ChatGPT globally use it for learning, productivity and skill-building.

Age Prediction And Parental Controls Add Another Layer

OpenAI is not relying only on the age a user enters. The Wall Street Journal reports that its age-prediction model uses roughly 2,000 signals, including chat content and usage patterns, and can move users into the under-18 experience even when they entered a false birth date.

Parents and guardians who link accounts can set Quiet Hours, manage selected settings and receive safety notifications in limited high-risk situations. OpenAI’s help documentation says parental controls do not give guardians access to a teen’s conversations, while its announcement says it is expanding notifications related to eating disorders while limiting the information shared.

Why OpenAI Is Making The Change Now

The launch arrives amid growing scrutiny over how minors use conversational AI. Reuters reports that OpenAI faces multiple lawsuits alleging ChatGPT harmed children, while Euronews cited a 2025 Common Sense Media study that found more than 70% of US teens were using AI chatbots for companionship and half used AI companions regularly.

For OpenAI, ChatGPT for Teens is both a product launch and a safety reset. It combines existing protections with new learning and well-being features, but the real test will be whether age prediction, default restrictions and parental tools meaningfully reduce risky interactions while preserving the educational uses OpenAI says dominate teen usage.
