OpenAI Gives ChatGPT Free Users Unlimited Text Chats With GPT-5.6 Luna

OpenAI is removing text-chat limits for ChatGPT Free users, giving them unlimited conversations powered by GPT-5.6 Luna, while introducing a new Think button for harder questions. However, limits will remain on file uploads, images and other tools.

OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT as the platform reaches around 1 billion weekly users.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for ChatGPT Free and Go users this week. Starting next week, users on these tiers will be able to continue text-based conversations without hitting the rate limits that previously restricted how many messages they could send.

The Verge noted that the change applies specifically to text chats. Messages involving file uploads, images and other tools will continue to face separate usage limits.

OpenAI also clarified that unlimited text chats remain subject to abuse guardrails, meaning the change should not be interpreted as unrestricted access for automated or abusive usage.

ChatGPT Free Users Also Get A New Think Button

Alongside unlimited text chats, OpenAI is introducing a Think button for Free and Go users.

The feature allows users to give GPT-5.6 Luna more time to reason through harder questions instead of relying solely on its standard response mode. TechCrunch reported that the unlimited text-chat access and Think button are scheduled to become available next week.

The update significantly expands what users can do without moving to a paid ChatGPT subscription, although advanced tools will continue to have usage limits.

OpenAI said, “This update gives more people the ability to keep asking, develop an idea, and get help when they need it.”

The expansion comes as ChatGPT reaches a major adoption milestone. OpenAI says around 1 billion people now use ChatGPT every week for tasks ranging from quick questions and web searches to planning, research, advice and complex decision-making.

GPT-5.6 Sol Gets An Upgrade For Plus And Pro Users

OpenAI is also making changes for its paying ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers.

The company has updated GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT to provide more focused responses, tighter formatting and improved factual reliability. Plus and Pro users can also use a new slider across web, mobile and desktop to control how much thought ChatGPT puts into an answer.

 

OpenAI's internal evaluations found that responses containing at least one factual error were around 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol compared with GPT-5.5 Instant.

The evaluation covered financial, medical and legal prompts requiring factual details such as dates, numbers, sources, rules or assumptions.

The updated GPT-5.6 Sol and its thinking slider became available to Plus and Pro users on August 6. OpenAI clarified that this version is optimized specifically for everyday ChatGPT conversations, while the GPT-5.6 Sol versions powering Work and Codex remain unchanged.
