OpenAI Acquires Two Technology Companies: Rockset And Multi

Recently, OpenAI made one of the biggest announcements the technology industry has seen in a long while; it had partnered with Apple.

It’s no secret that the artificial intelligence (AI) industry has grown leaps and bounds in the last few years, owing to the brilliant capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), a field that OpenAI dominates over.

What Does OpenAI’s Acquisition Of Rockset Entail?

 

• Through blog posts published on OpenAI’s and Rockset’s websites, the two companies announced that OpenAI has completed the acquisition of Rockset.

• This will also see Rockset’s capable team join OpenAI.

• OpenAI’s move comes as it recognizes that AI can enhance how businesses and organizations use their data.

• The purchase of Rockset brings its powerful real-time analytics database capabilities to OpenAI’s offerings, along with its world-class data indexing and querying capabilities.

• Furthermore, Rockset’s empowers its users, developers and enterprises to access real-time information of their own data to build more intelligent applications.

• As such, OpenAI will integrate Rockset’s technology to power its retrieval infrastructure.

• In 2023, Rockset raised $105 million in total funding.

• While the cost of the deal wasn’t disclosed and OpenAI declined to comment on the details, the AI leader leveraged its shares to buy the company in a stock deal, which set Rockset’s value at a few hundred million.

• This made the acquisition one of the largest deals executed by the leading AI company.

 

What Did OpenAI And Rockset Executives Say?

 

• Venkat Venkataramani, CEO of Rockset, said, “We’re excited to be joining OpenAI to empower users, enterprises and developers to fully leverage their data by bringing powerful retrieval to AI.”

• Venkataramani added, “I’m excited to share that OpenAI has completed the acquisition of Rockset. We are thrilled to join the OpenAI team and bring our technology and expertise to building safe and beneficial AGI.”

• [Contd.] “From the start, our vision at Rockset was to fundamentally transform the way data-driven applications were built. We developed our search and analytics database, taking full advantage of the cloud, to eliminate the complexity inherent in the data infrastructure needed for these apps.”

• Brad Lightcap, OpenAI COO, said, “Rockset’s infrastructure empowers companies to transform their data into actionable intelligence. We’re excited to bring these benefits to our customers by integrating Rockset’s foundation into OpenAI products.”

 

What Does OpenAI’s Acquisition Of Multi Entail?

 

• As per a blog post published on its website, Multi Software Co. announced that it was acquired by OpenAI.

• This adds to OpenAI’s crusade of enhancing its infrastructure and capabilities, to offer stronger and more powerful tools to its users.

• OpenAI’s purchase of Multi enables it to infuse an enterprise-focused, video-first collaboration platform.

• As per a source familiar with the move, the deal is technically an acqui-hire, which means that Multi’s team will join OpenAI once the deal is sealed.

• Furthermore, the move means that Multi will be winding down its operations, as it has already closed new team signups and teams currently using the platform will only be able to use the application until July 24, 2024.

• However, the company mentioned it could grant an extension based on particular cases.

• Post closure, the company will delete all user data.

• Alexander Embiricos, Cofounder of Multi, said, “Recently, we’ve been increasingly asking ourselves how we should work with computers. Not on or using computers, but truly with computers. With AI. We believe it’s one of the most important product questions of our time.”

• Embiricos added, “Thank you to everybody who used Multi. It was a privilege building with you, and we learnt a ton from you. We'll miss your feedback and bug reports, but we can’t wait to show you what we’re up to next.”
