At WWDC, Apple Launches Apple Intelligence And More Products
Updated on Tue, Jun 11, 2024
All the rage began in November 2022 when OpenAI launched its ChatGPT, which garnered a million users in less than five days.
Since then, all the top software solutions companies and other technology companies have tried to use the technology to enhance their products or internally to enhance processes and operations.
Microsoft, the primary backer of OpenAI, has seen it infuse GenAI across its product offerings and invest heavily to boost AI skilling and AI hubs.
The demand for the technology even propelled AI chip manufacturing leader NVIDIA to the top, where it sits as the second most valuable company in the world by market capitalization, overtaking Apple.
Talking about Apple, while all the big players were making moves, this tech giant remained rather quiet when it came to AI.
That was until the first day of Apple’s highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference AKA WWDC24, an event where Apple announces its latest products and services, which is finally under way, scheduled to run from June 10 - 14, 2024 (Monday - Friday).
So, what AI enhancements did Apple announce? Let’s explore!
Apple Partnering With OpenAI
-
One of the larger announcements included OpenAI and Apple announcing a partnership to integrate ChatGPT experiences into iOS, iPadOS and macOS, which will come later this year. This will be free for Apple users and not require them to create OpenAI or ChatGPT accounts.
-
This includes adding the capabilities to the Siri app, which will allow users to include photos in the questions they ask Siri. Users will be alerted before they are diverted from in-house models.
-
Powered by GPT-4o, this will allow users to leverage ChatGPT’s capabilities without having to jump in between tools.
-
ChatGPT will also be available in Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools, which is assisted by ChatGPT’s image creation capabilities to complement what users are writing about.
-
Users subscribing to one of OpenAI’s ChatGPT premium plans will be allowed to access paid features within Siri and other apps with ChatGPT integrations.
-
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said, “We're excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way. Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI's mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone. Together with Apple, we're making it easier for people to benefit from what AI can offer.”
-
Ahead of this, Apple’s SVP Craig Federighi revealed the company would work with other third-party models in the future, including Google’s Gemini, through partnerships and integrations.
Apple Intelligence
-
“Apple Intelligence brings powerful, intuitive, and integrated personal intelligence to Apple Platforms,” is how Apple’s website describes the company’s new and long-awaited GenAI offering.
-
As per the company, security remains one of its more important aspects, with the ecosystem being “designed with privacy from the ground up.”
-
Apple Intelligence, which will be available on the latest versions of its operating systems, will allow users to run and train machine learning and artificial intelligence models on Apple devices “like never before.”
-
Along with focusing on security, the ecosystem will enable personalization, bringing in the biggest update to Siri for over a decade, along with being integrated into most of the company’s apps.
-
This capability will also bring cross-app compatibility and multitasking, allowing users to leverage apps such as Maps, Mail, Calendar and more without having to switch between them.
-
As per CEO Tim Cook, “It has to be powerful enough to help with the things that matter most to you ... It has to be intuitive and easy to use. It has to be deeply integrated into your product experiences.”
-
[Contd.] “Most importantly, it has to understand you and be grounded in your personal context, like your routine, your relationships, your communications, and more ... And of course, it has to be built with privacy from the ground up together. All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence. It’s personal intelligence, and it’s the next big step for Apple.”
What Other AI Enhancements Is Apple Bringing?
-
Apple is bringing GenAI to emojis, calling the concept Genmoji. This feature enables users to generate customized emojis based on text inputs.
-
Apple is also bringing an on-device image generator, Image Playground, which will be integrated into apps like Messages, Keynote, Pages and more.
-
Furthermore, it will bring a stand-alone Image Playground app to iOS, with further access through an API.
-
The Apple Pencil sees an update, Image Wand, which lets users circle text to create images.
-
Apple will also enable its search feature for photos and videos.
-
The company’s new Passwords app will allow users to easily navigate their password collection, in addition to using iCloud to store and sync passwords.
-
The Smart Script feature will make handwriting smoother, straighter and appear cleaner when users write with the Apple Pencil in Notes.
-
Apple is also bringing a new Calculator for iPad app with new features that aren’t available on iPhones. This also includes Math Notes, which executes math for users.
-
The company also revealed a new operating system called macOS Sequoia.
-
Bringing in enhanced connectivity, Apple will allow users to send messages via satellite connections when they have no network or signal, by pointing their phone in the right direction.
-
Tap to Cash allows users to pay for things by tapping two iPhones together.
-
Apple also announced its latest OS for the iPhone, iOS 18, which “makes iPhone more personal, capable and intelligent than ever.”
-
Apple also revealed its visionOS 2 will bring new spatial computing experiences to Apple Vision Pro.
Do you think Apple will be able to grow its market share with these AI-powered updates and new products?
