In the world of artificial intelligence (AI), it’s no secret that NVIDIA is leading the race in AI chip manufacturing.

The company’s unparalleled capabilities have seen it grow not just in the number of customers it has but also in the market. Recently, we reported that NVIDIA breached the $2 trillion market capitalization ceiling in the stock market.

At the same time, the company’s CEO, Jensen Huang shared his vision about the future of the AI industry, focusing on artificial general intelligence (AGI) and more. Huang also voiced his confidence in the performance of NVIDIA, its products and the superiority of its AI chips.

Now, one of the leaders of the AI race has come up with a new announcement that’s set to revolutionize not just the AI sector but also the robotics industry!

So, what’s new with NVIDIA? Let’s explore!

What Did NVIDIA Announce?

  • In a press release by NVIDIA on its website, the company announced Project GR00T, which is a general-purpose foundation model for humanoid robots.

  • GR00T, which stands for Generalist Robot 00 Technology, is designed to push NVIDIA’s efforts in robotics and embodied AI.

  • As per the company, robots powered by GR00T “will be designed to understand natural language and emulate movements by observing human actions — quickly learning coordination, dexterity and other skills in order to navigate, adapt and interact with the real world.”

  • NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang even demonstrated some robots completing various tasks in his GTC keynote.

  • The company also unveiled a new computer for humanoid robots based on the NVIDIA Thor system-on-a-chip (SoC) called Jetson Thor.

  • Jetson Thor is a performance, power and size-optimized computing platform capable of handling complex tasks and natural interactions between people and machines.

  • Furthermore, NVIDIA is building a comprehensive AI platform for leading humanoid robot companies such as 1X Technologies, Agility Robotics, Apptronik, Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, Fourier Intelligence, Sanctuary AI, Unitree Robotics, XPENG Robotics and more.

  • The release also mentioned significant upgrades to the NVIDIA Isaac robotics platform, including generative AI foundation models and tools for simulation and AI workflow infrastructure.

  • As per the release, the Isaac tools that GR00T uses can create new foundation models for any robot embodiment in any environment.

  • NVIDIA also announced pretrained robotic models Isaac Manipulator, which offers state-of-the-art dexterity and modular AI capabilities for robotic arms, as well as Isaac Perceptor, which provides multi-camera, 3D surround-vision capabilities and can be used in autonomous mobile robots in manufacturing.

  • The new Isaac platform capabilities are expected to be available in the next quarter.

What Did Stakeholders Say?

  • Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA, said, “Building foundation models for general humanoid robots is one of the most exciting problems to solve in AI today ... The enabling technologies are coming together for leading roboticists around the world to take giant leaps towards artificial general robotics.”

  • Geordie Rose, Co-founder and CEO of Sanctuary AI, said, “Embodied AI will not only help address some of humanity’s biggest challenges, but also create innovations which are currently beyond our reach or imagination ... Technology this important shouldn’t be built in silos, which is why we prioritize long-term partners like NVIDIA.”

  • Jonathan Hurst, Co-founder and Chief Robot Officer at Agility Robotics, said, “We are at an inflection point in history, with human-centric robots like Digit poised to change labor forever. Modern AI will accelerate development, paving the way for robots like Digit to help people in all aspects of daily life

  • [Contd.] “We’re excited to partner with NVIDIA to invest in the computing, simulation tools, machine learning environments and other necessary infrastructure to enable the dream of robots being a part of daily life.”

Do you think NVIDIA will become a major leader in the robotics industry just as it is in the AI industry?
