With businesses seeking to infuse the ever-expanding capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into their processes, artificial intelligence product creators find the need to integrate the most powerful and latest artificial intelligence infrastructure, particularly GPUs (Graphics Processing Units).

This includes AI chips, which form one of the most important elements in pushing the progress of AI applications and software packed with the goodness of GenAI.

As they play such an integral role in the progression of the artificial intelligence sector, semiconductor manufacturers find the need to keep upgrading their offerings, to ensure they stay ahead of the market.

As a result, AI chip giants NVIDIA, Intel and AMD all announced new chips and what their future products would consist of at COMPUTEX 2024, the annual computer expo held in Taiwan.

So, what did these industry leaders reveal? Let’s explore!

What Did NVIDIA Announce?

  • Speaking at COMPUTEX 2024, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang revealed the next generation of AI chips the company would produce, among other developments and plans.

  • The reveal comes just months after the company announced its new chip, Blackwell, which is still in production and expected to be available later this year or even 2025.

  • The new AI chip architecture is currently dubber “Rubin” and is slated for 2026.

  • Furthermore, Jensen Huang mentioned that the company will look to release new AI chips every year, following a “one-year rhythm”, which accelerates from the previous two-year update cycle it had in place.

  • Speaking at the event, Jensen Huang said, “Today, we’re at the cusp of a major shift in computing. The intersection of AI and accelerated computing is set to redefine the future.”

  • “The future of computing is accelerated. With our innovations in AI and accelerated computing, we’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and driving the next wave of technological advancement.”

  • The move comes as the company looks to cement its dominant position in the artificial intelligence chip market.

  • NVIDIA’s chips are used by many cloud-based AI models, including ChatGPT using it for training and deployment phases.

On the other hand, AI chip companies like AMD and Intel, who are competitors of NVIDIA, also announced new AI chips.

What Did Intel Announce?

  • At COMPUTEX 2024, Intel announced it was launching the next iteration of its Intel Xeon 6 processors as it looked to regain ground in the data center chips market.

  • Its new chip comes with improved performance and power efficiency for high-density, scale-out workloads in the data center.

  • Ahead of this, it also announced the pricing for its AI accelerator kits, Intel Gaudi 2 and Intel Gaudi 3, which would offer high performance and cost up to one-third less than those offered by competitive platforms.

  • Furthermore, the combination of the Xeon processors and Intel’s Gaudi AI accelerators would make AI faster, cheaper and more accessible.

  • Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, said, “AI is driving one of the most consequential eras of innovation the industry has ever seen.”

  • “The magic of silicon is once again enabling exponential advancements in computing that will push the boundaries of human potential and power the global economy for years to come.”

  • Intel also unveiled a new update to its Lunar Lake, the flagship processor for the next generation of AI PCs, which would come with increased power efficiency and no-compromise application compatibility, delivering up to 40% lower system-on-chip (SoC) power, as compared to its predecessor.

What Did AMD Announce?

  • At COMPUTEX 2024, AMD announced its new artificial intelligence chip, the AMD Instinct MI325X accelerator, which helps fit a 1 trillion parameter model in a single AMD Instinct Platform.

  • The chip will be made available from the fourth quarter of 2024.

  • The chip comes as a part of the AMD Instinct MI300X series of accelerators.

  • Furthermore, AMD also spoke about its future plans, unveiling a multiyear, expanded AMD Instinct accelerator roadmap.

  • AMD also unveiled the Ryzen AI 300 Series Processors, which would power a range of AI PCs, enabling the development of generative AI tools, digital assistants and AI-infused computing directly on laptops.

  • Brad McCredie, Corporate VP, Data Center Accelerated Compute, AMD, said, “The AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators continue their strong adoption from numerous partners and customers including Microsoft Azure, Meta, Dell Technologies, HPE, Lenovo and others, a direct result of the AMD Instinct MI300X accelerator exceptional performance and value proposition.”

  • “With our updated annual cadence of products, we are relentless in our pace of innovation, providing the leadership capabilities and performance the AI industry and our customers expect to drive the next evolution of data center AI training and inference.”

  • Ahead of this, AMD introduced “the world’s most powerful desktop processor” in its new AMD Ryzen 9950X processor, which is designed for desktop PCs.

  • Jack Huynh, SVP and GM, Computing and Graphics Group, AMD, said, “We are so excited to introduce the Ryzen 9000 series, the world’s most powerful desktop processors for gamers and creators, and the 3rd generation AMD Ryzen AI processors, which provide leadership AI and compute performance for ultrathin and premium Copilot+ PCs.”
