A phrase that finds no place in the competition of the world’s top companies, as each is constantly trying to beat the other to take the throne and wear the crown.
Yet, in the case of Microsoft and Apple, it’s been a while since Microsoft outshone Apple to claim pole position.
In fact, in the last few years, particularly since 2018, there have been a handful of times that Microsoft has gotten the better of its rival. The last time Microsoft managed this achievement was back in 2021 when Apple faced uncertainties over its supply chain owing to the pandemic.
However, 2024 has once again brought Microsoft good fortune in the form of taking the lead over Apple.
So, how did this happen and what does it mean for both companies? Let’s explore!
How Did Microsoft Take The Lead?
-
As trading closed on Friday, Microsoft overtook Apple to become the world’s largest company by market capitalization.
-
A major contributing factor for Microsoft is its focus on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI).
-
Sticking to this trending technology, Microsoft managed to increase its market value by over $1 trillion.
-
As such, market valuation reached $2.887 trillion, making it the highest the company’s highest valuation ever, while Apple’s was $2.875 trillion, a significant amount lower than the $3.081 trillion it reached on December 14, 2023.
-
Microsoft looks set to lead the way as it increased its position in OpenAI, the creator of the popular ChatGPT chatbot. This led to Microsoft incorporating the industry-leading technology across its suite of software products.
-
This also helped further the adoption of its cloud-computing business and showed promise for its search engine to challenge Google’s supremacy.
- On the other hand, Apple is witnessing the demand for its flagship product, the iPhone, dwindling, especially in one of its key markets, China. One of the key factors in this issue is the growing market for Huawei products.
What’s Next For Microsoft?
-
“Our vision is pretty straightforward. We are the Copilot company,” said Microsoft’s Satya Nadella in November 2023 at Microsoft’s Ignite conference.
-
To recap, Microsoft’s Copilot is a virtual assistant or chatbot, initially launched as a built-in feature for Microsoft Bing and Microsoft Edge in February 2023.
-
Keeping true to this aim, Microsoft even brought a dedicated “Copilot key” on its Windows keyboard after nearly 30 years.
-
Now, Microsoft is looking to bring its Copilot AI assistant to small businesses through the company’s productivity apps, enabling small businesses to gain access to GenAI capabilities.
-
Alternatively, paying customers of Microsoft 365 can sign up for a new paid version of Copilot.
-
“Today we’re announcing the availability of Copilot Pro, a new subscription that delivers the most advanced features and capabilities of Microsoft Copilot to individuals looking to supercharge their Copilot experience. Whether you need advanced help with writing, coding, designing, researching or learning, Copilot Pro brings greater performance, productivity and creativity,” wrote Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President, Consumer Chief Marketing Officer in a blog post.
-
The post continued to mention the “introduction of Copilot Pro, a new premium subscription for individuals that provides a higher tier of service for AI capabilities, brings Copilot AI capabilities to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, and new capabilities, such as the ability to create Copilot GPTs. We are also announcing the general availability of our Copilot app for iOS and Android phones.”
- Ahead of this, Microsoft and Vodafone also signed a 10-year strategic partnership to bring GenAI, digital services, cloud services and customer-focused AI services to over 300 million businesses and consumers.
Coming back to Apple, Gene Munster, Managing Partner at Deepwater Asset Management, believes, “Apple needs to take note that if they want to maintain their spot as one of the most innovative tech companies, they have to get behind A.I. in a big way.”
This seems quite on point considering other companies engaged deeply in AI, like NVIDIA, Meta, Alphabet and others enjoyed a major jump in their market capitalization in the last year.
Do you think Apple will be able to regain its spot regardless of its AI stance? Do you think Apple would take an unassailable position if it were to invest heavily in AI and launch such products?
