Meta Launches 30B Muse Glimmer Open-Weight Model For Local AI Agents
Updated on Tue, Aug 11, 2026
Meta has launched Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion-parameter open-weight AI model designed to run agentic workloads directly on consumer hardware, giving developers an option for building persistent AI agents without relying entirely on cloud infrastructure or network access.
TL;DR
- Meta’s Muse Glimmer is a 30B open-weight model built for autonomous agentic tasks on consumer hardware.
- It supports reasoning, tool use, coding, failure recovery and text-and-image inputs.
- Quantized versions can fit within 24GB or 32GB memory envelopes.
- Meta released Glimmer under the Apache 2.0 license and plans to release open weights for the more powerful Muse Spark 1.2.
Meta Brings AI Agents Onto Local Devices
Meta released Muse Glimmer on August 10, 2026, describing it as a model purpose-built for autonomous agentic tasks that can run locally on consumer hardware. The model was distilled from Meta’s larger Muse Spark model and has around 29.6 billion parameters, including its vision encoder.
Unlike AI systems that depend on cloud infrastructure for inference, Muse Glimmer is designed to perform workloads directly on a Mac or PC with suitable hardware. According to the official model card, Meta says the model combines multi-step reasoning, reliable tool use, multimodal understanding and failure recovery, allowing an agent to diagnose errors and retry failed tool calls instead of immediately stopping.
The model can work with interleaved text and images, allowing applications to interpret documents, screenshots, charts and other visual information alongside conversations. It also supports a context length of more than 131,000 tokens and was trained on data spanning more than 100 languages.
Muse Glimmer Targets Always-On Local AI Workflows
One of Glimmer’s biggest differentiators is how Meta has optimized the model for local deployment.
Meta uses quantization to compress the model's weights to around 4-bit precision, bringing the language model below 20GB. Its K-Quant-17GB configuration targets systems with 24GB of memory, while another version targets a 32GB memory envelope.
Meta also incorporated speculative decoding through a lightweight DFlash companion model to improve generation speed. In Meta’s published testing, an Nvidia RTX 5090 reached an average 233.4 tokens per second with DFlash speculation, compared with 74.9 tokens per second without it. Apple’s M5 Max reached 50.2 tokens per second using the same technique.
For developers, that could make Glimmer useful for local coding assistants, personal AI agents, document analysis and other workflows where keeping inference on the device can reduce dependence on cloud services. Hugging Face, which added day-one support for Glimmer across tools including Transformers, llama.cpp and vLLM, also highlighted privacy and lower cloud costs as potential advantages of local deployment.

How Does Muse Glimmer Perform?
Meta says Muse Glimmer performs competitively against similarly sized models across several agentic benchmarks.
On Meta’s published benchmark results, Glimmer scored 75.5 on MCP Atlas compared with 54.2 for Gemma4-31B and 62.5 for Qwen3.6-27B. It scored 74.6 on DeepSearch QA, compared with 61.7 and 71.1 for the two models, respectively.
However, Glimmer does not lead every benchmark. Hugging Face’s technical overview shows Qwen3.6-27B posting higher results on tests including OSWorld-Verified, SkillsBench and SWE-Bench Verified, reinforcing that Glimmer’s main selling point is the combination of agentic capabilities and local deployment rather than outright benchmark leadership.
Meta also acknowledges limitations. The Muse Glimmer model card says the model may generate inaccurate, biased or objectionable responses and can still make mistakes during multi-step reasoning, especially in unfamiliar scenarios.
Meta Returns To Open-Weight AI
Muse Glimmer arrives as Meta renews its push around open-weight AI.
The model is available under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, allowing developers to download and modify it. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also said the company plans to release the weights for Muse Spark 1.2, which Meta describes as its most advanced model, with larger models also planned.
In an accompanying essay outlining his vision for AI, Zuckerberg argued against concentrating powerful AI systems within a small number of companies and governments.
“The notion that AI is so dangerous that the only safe path is an extreme concentration of power seems inherently problematic,” said Zuckerberg in The Future Is For Everyone.
For Meta, Muse Glimmer therefore serves two purposes. It gives developers a smaller model specifically designed for local autonomous workflows while also marking a renewed attempt to make open-weight models a central part of Meta’s AI strategy, according to Reuters.
