Meta has acquired AI device startup Limitless as it looks to strengthen its AI wearables lineup.

The deal was announced by Limitless co-founder and CEO Dan Siroker in a blog post (which is currently plastered on the company’s home page), which also sports a video revealing the purchase, what it means for Limitless’ customers, and what the future holds for the company.

“Meta recently announced a new vision to bring personal superintelligence to everyone and a key part of that vision is building incredible AI-enabled wearables. We share this vision and we'll be joining Meta to help bring our shared vision to life,” said Siroker in the video and the blog post.

The financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Founded in 2020, Limitless is most famous for its Pendant device, which attaches to clothing, pockets, or a lanyard, and records and transcribes real-world conversations, from in‑person meetings to impromptu conversations.

Formerly known as Rewind, the acquisition means that Limitless will shut its Rewind Mac app, while sales for the Pendant device have stopped. Rewind rose to fame in 2022 thanks to its exceptional compression capabilities, which could turn a 10GB recording file into one smaller than 3MB.

However, the company will continue supporting existing Pendant customers for at least another year. They will also get the Unlimited Plan for free and no longer need to pay a subscription. There will also be updates to regional availability. Customers who wish to continue availing services will have to agree to its updated privacy policy and terms of service.

Limitless said data stored will remain safe, regardless of whether a customer chooses to use the Pendant or not. The company has also published guidelines and features that allow users to export or delete all their data, accessible from the app.

The deal comes amid reports suggesting that Meta is delaying its new mixed reality glasses codenamed Phoenix, as the company plans to launch a fully polished device capable of delivering higher quality experiences.

The new date moves from the second half of 2026 to the first half of 2027.

The device is said to be a new format factor that’s closer to the Apple Vision Pro, adding to Meta’s current offerings that include VR headsets and smart glasses.

Meta’s current product line includes the Quest MR series, Orion AR glasses, and AI-enabled smart glasses with Ray-Ban and Oakley.

The company also spoke about how its smart glasses help people with disabilities perform daily tasks more independently, using hands-free support that enables them to make phone calls, send text messages, translate speech, and capture photos and videos using their voice.

Amid all this, Meta faces stiff competition from China-owned Alibaba, which recently launched its $500 Quark AI glasses powered by its proprietary Qwen model.

Meta did not provide any comment on the matter.

It’s not clear yet if the acquisition of Limitless will help achieve this dream, but given Meta’s purpose for the purchase, it’s fair to assume that it will.

“We’re excited that Limitless will be joining Meta to help accelerate our work to build AI-enabled wearables,” a Meta spokesperson said.

Do you think these moves will help Meta capture a stronger position in the AI wearables market?
