Lyft To Uplift Services With Autonomous Vehicle Partnerships
Updated on Thu, Nov 7, 2024
This includes Uber making some super deals with robotaxi leader Waymo to offer its services in Austin, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia.
Another deal saw a mega-commitment from the ride-hailer in the form of a partnership with globally leading electric vehicle (EV) automaker BYD. This deal would see Uber bring 100,000 BYD EVs to its platform.
Now, its competitor is making big strides to cement its position in the autonomous rideshare market with a series of partnerships.
In a blog post published on its website, Lyft revealed that it was partnering with
-
Mobileye, a leader in self-driving tech and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
-
May Mobility, an autonomous driving (AD) technology company that’s redefining the future of autonomous mobility-as-a-service (MaaS).
-
Nexar, a leader in AI-powered mobility solutions that offers vision-based data services for the autonomous vehicle industry.
The partnership with Mobileye aims to bring autonomous vehicles (AVs) to the Lyft network and make its scaled rideshare platform available to all vehicles with Mobileye’s self-driving technology.
Mobileye brings its world-renowned expertise in artificial intelligence, computer vision, mapping, and integrated hardware and software to its prized autonomous driving and driver-assistance technologies.
In a bid to challenge Uber in Atlanta, Lyft will leverage its partnership with May Mobility to directly deploy AVs to its ridesharing platform in Atlanta. Riders will have the opportunity to ride Toyota Sienna minivans equipped with May Mobility’s autonomous technology.
This service is expected to go live in 2025, will scale over time and will bring Toyota Sienna minivans equipped with May Mobility’s autonomous technology to users.
Ahead of this, Nexar and Lyft will “explore ways to harness the power of aggregated, anonymized marketplace and fleet data to help OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and AV companies build better and safer autonomous technology.”
The blended effort will leverage Nexar's hundreds of millions of hours of video footage to build a more complete data set for autonomous research and development.
What Did Lyft, Mobileye, May Mobility And Nexar Executives Say About The Partnership?
-
David Risher, CEO of Lyft, said, “We're thrilled to work with Mobileye, May Mobility, and Nexar to build the autonomous future together, with more partnerships to follow.”
-
Risher added, “Lyft's aim is to connect AVs, drivers, riders, and partners to create new opportunities for all. Our rideshare network will continue to evolve as millions of people will have the opportunity to earn billions of dollars whether they choose to drive, put their AVs into service, or both.”
-
Prof. Amnon Shashua, President and CEO of Mobileye, said, “Cooperating with leading mobility providers and operators is an essential step to bring autonomous mobility services to reality.”
-
[Contd.] “Enabling Mobileye Drive with Lyft’s network of 40 million annual riders in North America would allow our AV customers to reach new markets and geographies with autonomous services and provide the benefits of the technology through a sustainable business.”
-
Edwin Olson, co-founder and CEO of May Mobility, said, “Partnering with Lyft will open up new markets for us to operate in, granting greater mobility to more people, more quickly. We will continue to deliver the valuable service our riders love as we work with Lyft to make our cities better places to live.”
-
Eran Shir, Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder of Nexar, said, “Nexar's collaboration with Lyft is a pivotal moment in our journey to accelerate the future of autonomous driving. By combining Nexar's unparalleled video data capabilities with Lyft's vast rideshare network, we are setting a new standard for AV training and real-world driving insights.”
Recently, global EV and AV player Tesla also revealed its entry into the autonomous vehicle sector when it unveiled its Cybercab, Robovan and more, adding to the likes of Waymo, Cruise and others.
Do you think these partnerships will help Lyft lift its customer base in the autonomous ride-hailing industry? Do you think the company will continue to face stiff competition from the likes of Uber, Tesla, Waymo, Cruise and others?
