It's finally here!

It’s been over a decade in the making but Elon Musk’s dream of delivering autonomous vehicles is finally fulfilled.

Well, not entirely.

While Elon Musk did unveil the Tesla robotaxi, dubbed Cybercab, at Tesla’s We, Robot event, it will be rolled out over the coming years. Yet, it’s a mighty step forward in the company’s move to provide fully autonomous mobility for all.

At the event, the company revealed a range of other new shiny autonomous vehicles and robots, along with other key announcements.

Let’s begin with the main act.

The Cybercab

Making a grand entry nearly an hour later than the event was scheduled to begin, Elon Musk and his Cybercab arrived on the stage to great applause.

The Cybercab will offer fully autonomous, driverless mobility once the company irons out all the kinks in its current self-driving software.

It’ll have to, considering the vehicle doesn’t have a steering wheel or pedals. This also means it needs approval from regulators before going into production.

It even lacks a plug to charge the vehicle. This is because it uses inductive charging AKA wireless charging, which uses electromagnetic induction to provide electricity.

As such, the vehicle will rely solely on artificial intelligence (AI) and cameras and will no other hardware.

The futuristic design sports two butterfly doors (they open upwards) that open to a small cabin that seats two passengers.

As per Elon Musk, the vehicle will be priced at less than $30,000, costing as low as $0.20 per mile.

They’re also set to boost safety by 10-20 times, with Musk saying, “This is a very big deal. It’ll save lives, a lot of lives, and prevent injuries.”

The all-electric vehicle company plans to bring in fully autonomous driving to Texas and California by next year, while production on the Cybercab will begin by 2026 and deliveries will begin in late 2027.

Tesla Robovan

The Robovan (pronounced ruh-BO-vehn by Musk), which looks far from anything from a conventional van, is also a self-driving vehicle that’s intended to fulfill the company’s ride-hailing service, Tesla Network but will also be available to people for purchase.

There’s no official metric to confirm that it’s ten times better than the Cybercab but the Tesla Robovan will be able to carry up to 20 people – 18 more than what the Cybercab will do.

Alternatively, it can be used to transport goods, complete sports teams or can be used for construction or food service transit.

“The Robovan is what’s gonna solve for high density,” said Musk, adding, “So if you want to take a sports team somewhere, or you’re looking to really get the cost of travel down to, I don’t know, 5-10, cents a mile, then you can use the Robovan.”

Musk had dropped hints about the van before and even showed an image of a covered van-shaped vehicle in a shareholder meeting.

Tesla Bot

Musk also showed off the company’s humanoid Tesla bot, called Optimus, which is now in development.

“The Optimus robots will walk among you,” said Musk, before informing attendees that the bots weren’t there just for show but would serve them drinks at a bar on site.

This came with an ominous warning where Musk asked attendees to “be nice” to the bots.

As per the company’s website, the bot will be able to help people with their house chores and run errands.

While there is no official confirmation about its price, Optimus is expected to cost between $25,000 and $30,000.

Are you excited to see Tesla’s autonomous vehicles on the road soon?
