Lyft-May Hit Atlanta & Amazon’s Zoox Rolls Out In Las Vegas Amid Waymo Growth

Now, the two companies have made good on their deal, as they announced they are rolling out their first autonomous vehicle deployment together.
Translation: they’re bringing their first robotaxi to Atlanta.
Robotaxis are autonomous vehicles that ply the roads as taxicabs, sometimes offering customers rides for lower prices or sometimes even free.
Lyft riders can use their app to match with one of May Mobility’s hybrid-electric Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS vehicles in Midtown Atlanta and surrounding areas. As a pilot program, this service will be available only to Lyft users in the area; however, the two plan to expand service hours and vehicle availability in the months ahead.
While the general idea is to operate the vehicles without any drivers, the initial rides will come with standby operators who will take the wheel when required, as well as answer questions riders may have, and even make them feel comfortable.
“Think of them as your friendly guides to the future of transportation,” says Lyft.
The vehicles are also fitted with May Mobility's patented Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) platform, which provides active monitoring, vehicle guidance, and predictive capabilities, and has been tested “through millions of commercial autonomous miles.”
Overall, the move aims to prioritize safety, transparency, and human experience, building on a theme that “looks surprisingly human.”
“This isn’t just another tech rollout—it’s a thoughtful introduction to autonomous transportation that prioritizes rider comfort and community trust, taking a measured approach that puts people first,” reads Lyft’s news release.
The pending success of Lyft’s Atlanta deployment is expected to serve as the base for further expansion into the Southeast and beyond.
On the other side of the country, Amazon-backed Zoox has finally launched its robotaxis on the roads of Las Vegas, specifically on and around the Las Vegas Strip—a move that’s been more than a decade in the making.
According to the company’s news release, users can book rides to locations such as Resorts World Las Vegas, AREA15, Topgolf, and other resort and entertainment properties.
“Las Vegas is a city famous for unforgettable moments, and it is the ideal location for our debut. Zoox is about transforming the entire ride-hailing experience, making every ride a delightful experience,” said Aicha Evans, CEO of Zoox.
Zoox's rides are currently free and available through the Zoox app (available on iOS and Android). This comes as the company awaits state approval to charge for such rides.
Despite numerous competing brands in the robotaxi sector, Zoox has now become the first company in history to provide a fully autonomous ride-hailing service in a purpose-built robotaxi.
“The autonomous vehicle industry has made remarkable strides this year, bringing us closer to a future of safer, more accessible mobility,” added Evans. “With the launch of our fully driverless ride-hailing service using a purposefully designed robotaxi, we're thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking journey.”
Zoox plans to launch rides across Austin and Miami soon, with rides in San Francisco pending an official launch date—in the meantime, riders can join the Zoox waitlist.
All this comes as Google-backed Waymo continues to lead the way.
Recently, the company revealed that it received authorization to offer fully autonomous rides at San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) terminals. However, this will begin with fully autonomous testing in the coming months and commercial services later in the year.
This is the second Airport where Waymo will operate, following its deployment at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
Waymo is also set to expand its self-driving taxi services to Denver in the fall. It’s expected to begin with testing a mixed fleet of Jaguar I-PACE with the 5th-generation Waymo Driver and Zeekr RT vehicles equipped with its 6th-generation Waymo Driver.
Currently, the company is “coordinating closely with city and state officials.”
Ahead of this, Waymo is expanding in the Pacific Northwest, bringing its services to the broader Seattle metropolitan area. Waymo has already spent years testing and scanning the area.
Over the past few months, the robotaxi world has been ripe with innovation, new startups, and unbelievable milestones.
Once touted to be the leader of the sector, Elon Musk’s Tesla finally unveiled its robotaxis—albeit to a limited “invite-only” group at first. The company finally deployed robotaxis on the streets of Austin, Texas, which is also home to its headquarters, on June 22, 2025, amid delay scares.
However, despite its highly anticipated launch, Tesla isn’t the leader in the sector and has fallen behind several self-driving vehicle automakers and software providers.
