India Hits 100M Weekly ChatGPT Users, OpenAI Plans More Partnerships

India now has 100 million people using ChatGPT every week, making it one of OpenAI’s biggest markets globally, CEO Sam Altman said ahead of the government-hosted IndiaAI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
Writing in The Times of India on Sunday, Altman said India is ChatGPT’s second-largest user base after the United States. The milestone comes as the platform’s global weekly active users reached 800 million as of October 2025 and are reportedly nearing 900 million.
The company opened a New Delhi office in August 2025 and introduced a sub-$5 ChatGPT Go tier for India’s price-sensitive market. That plan was later made free for a year for Indian users.
Altman also pointed to students as a key driver of adoption, saying India has the largest number of student users of ChatGPT globally. “With its focus on access, practical Al literacy, and the infrastructure that supports widespread adoption, India is well positioned to broaden who benefits from the technology and to help shape how democratic AI is adopted at scale,” Altman wrote.
