Honda & Nissan Partner On Joint Vehicle Software After Failed Merger Talks

Honda and Nissan may have walked away from merger talks, but the two Japanese automakers are getting closer where future vehicles could matter most: software.

The companies have signed a joint development agreement for standardized vehicle electronics and software, targeting next-generation vehicles from fiscal 2029 onward.

Honda And Nissan Standardize Core SDV Technology For Fiscal 2029

The agreement will see Honda and Nissan establish common specifications for multiple core electronic control units, or ECUs, within the electrical and electronic architecture of their next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

Those common foundations will extend beyond hardware. The automakers also plan to standardize the in-vehicle operating system, key parts of the middleware, and vehicle-control software running on the ECUs.

The jointly developed architecture is expected to appear in next-generation vehicles from fiscal 2029 onward. By sharing these foundational technologies, Honda and Nissan aim to combine development resources, improve R&D speed and investment efficiency, lower development costs, and gain economies of scale.
 

 

Vehicle Software Becomes A Bigger Battleground For Global Automakers

The collaboration comes as software takes a larger role in how automakers differentiate vehicles. Advanced driver-assistance systems, connected services, entertainment features, vehicle controls, and over-the-air updates increasingly depend on software platforms that are expensive and complex to develop.

That pressure has intensified as Chinese automakers such as BYD gain ground in markets including Europe and Southeast Asia with electric and hybrid vehicles carrying advanced software features.

For Honda and Nissan, sharing core vehicle technology offers a way to compete without independently developing the same software foundations.

The agreement also builds on discussions that began in 2024, when Honda and Nissan started researching next-generation software platforms together. Their software partnership has continued even after the companies abandoned merger talks that could have created the world's fourth-largest automaker.

Mitsubishi Motors Could Extend The Honda-Nissan Software Alliance

For now, the confirmed agreement remains between Honda and Nissan, with fiscal 2029 serving as the target for introducing the shared ECU and software architecture into next-generation vehicles.
