Google is continuing to expand the role of AI across its products, and Gmail is the latest platform getting a major upgrade. At Google I/O 2026, the company introduced “Gmail Live,” a new conversational AI feature to help users interact with their inboxes more naturally instead of relying only on keyword searches.

TL;DR

  • Gmail Live can pull details like flights, appointments, and bookings directly from emails through conversational AI.
  • Powered by Gemini AI, Gmail Live can find information, answer follow-up questions, and understand conversation context.
  • Gmail Live will launch later this summer and will first be available to Google AI Ultra subscribers.

Powered by Gemini AI, Gmail Live allows users to ask questions about information stored in their inbox using natural language. Instead of typing search terms or looking through multiple emails, users can simply ask for details related to flights, appointments, hotel bookings, Airbnb door codes, school events, and more.

According to Google, the feature is built to make finding buried information easier, especially in crowded inboxes where traditional searches may not always deliver the right result. During a media briefing ahead of Google I/O, Devanshi Bhandari, product lead for Gmail, explained how the feature works in real-time conversations.

“Gmail Live can answer naturally phrased questions, respond to follow-up questions, and pivot if you need to interrupt it,” Devanshi Bhandari said.

In demonstrations shared during the event, Gmail Live was shown understanding context between different topics, such as distinguishing between a “field trip” and a vacation “trip.” The AI could also pull detailed information from emails, including hotel room numbers, and understand who users were referring to even if names were not directly mentioned.

Google also confirmed that similar voice-powered AI experiences will be added to Google Keep. However, the company clarified that Gmail Live is not replacing the standard Gmail search experience and will instead serve as an optional feature alongside existing tools.

The move comes as Google continues to push AI-powered experiences into products used by millions of people daily. The company appears to be taking a more flexible approach this time after previously facing criticism over AI-focused changes in Google Photos, where some users preferred traditional search options.

Alongside Gmail Live, Google announced additional Gmail updates, including ready-to-send drafts, faster file access, and improved task management features that allow users to mark individual to-dos as completed directly from the inbox.

Google also revealed that its broader AI Inbox experience, which summarizes important tasks and emails, will expand beyond Google AI Ultra subscribers to Google AI Pro and Plus users. Meanwhile, Gmail Live is expected to roll out later this summer and will initially be available only for Google AI Ultra subscribers.
