Overall Rating
As India accelerates its push to build homegrown artificial intelligence (AI) systems, the spotlight is steadily shifting toward voice technology. With a country as linguistically diverse as India, creating AI that can truly understand and respond in multiple native languages has become both a technological challenge and a national priority.

TL;DR

  • Gnani.ai launched Inya VoiceOS, a 5B-parameter voice AI model.
  • Built for natural conversations in multiple Indian languages.
  • Marks a major step in India’s push for homegrown AI.

At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, homegrown AI firm Gnani.ai launched a 5-billion-parameter voice-to-voice foundational model aimed at enabling natural spoken interactions across multiple Indian languages.

The launch marks a big step under the broader IndiaAI Mission, which seeks to strengthen the country’s sovereign AI capabilities.

The system, called Inya VoiceOS, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the summit and introduced as a research preview. The company indicated that this version is an early release, with a larger and more advanced model currently in development.

Unlike traditional text-based AI systems, Inya VoiceOS is built to handle voice-to-voice interactions directly. This means users can speak naturally in their preferred Indian language and receive spoken responses, making digital systems more accessible, especially in regions where typing in English is not common practice.

With 5 billion parameters, the model falls into the category of large foundational systems designed to learn patterns in speech, language, and context at scale. The focus on Indian languages is particularly noteworthy, given the limited representation of many regional languages in global AI models.

The launch at a national platform such as the India AI Impact Summit 2026 shows the government’s intent to back indigenous AI development. As India aims to become a major force in global AI, steps like this show the country is working to depend less on foreign technology and build AI systems designed for its own people and languages.

Gnani.ai’s research preview of Inya VoiceOS may be an early version, but it sets the tone for what could become a larger ecosystem of voice-driven AI built in India, for India.
