Disney To Hire 66 Character.AI Employees In $180 Million Deal
Updated on Tue, Oct 20, 2026
The Walt Disney Company is strengthening its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities by offering jobs to 66 employees of bankrupt chatbot startup Character.AI, with an estimated $180 million committed to compensation and retention over three years.
The development follows Character.AI's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing on October 12, 2026, and Disney's separate $20 million proposal to license some of the startup's technology and intellectual property.
Here's what happened.
TL;DR
- Disney has offered jobs to 66 Character.AI employees, with an estimated $180 million in compensation and retention payments over three years.
- Former Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand has already joined Disney as its first company-wide Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
- Disney is also pursuing a $20 million technology licensing deal, while Character.AI's bankruptcy proceedings and user data concerns remain unresolved.
According to TechCrunch, court filings revealed that Disney agreed to offer employment to the majority of Character.AI's workforce, with estimated annual compensation of $60 million.
The publication also reported that the vast majority of employees receiving offers had accepted them.
Meanwhile, Gizmodo reported on October 19 that Disney's compensation and retention commitment could total approximately $180 million over three years.
However, this commitment is separate from the $20 million Disney has proposed to spend on licensing Character.AI technology and intellectual property.
Disney Hires Character.AI Talent, But Not Its Chatbots
Interestingly, Disney's interest in Character.AI predates the startup's bankruptcy filing.
On September 18, Disney announced the appointment of Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, effective October 2.
Anand reports directly to Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro and is responsible for helping advance the entertainment giant's technology strategy.
“Karandeep brings a rare mix of experience across infrastructure, consumer technology and AI,” said D'Amaro, adding that Anand would help Disney strengthen its storytelling, technology and company-wide operations.
The company's interest extends beyond leadership appointments.
In an October 19 Forbes analysis, contributor Maureen Kerr explained that Disney's proposed agreement covers a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive license to certain technologies and patents.
However, the agreement excludes Character.AI's user data, conversations, training datasets, finished AI models, brand and consumer application.
Essentially, Disney is looking to secure the technical expertise and underlying intellectual property without taking over Character.AI's existing chatbot community.
For a company that owns entertainment franchises spanning Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars, the move could support the development of new AI-powered entertainment experiences.
However, Disney has not announced a specific consumer product arising from these hires or the proposed licensing arrangement.
Character.AI Faces Bankruptcy Amid Mounting Legal And Financial Pressure
The workforce transition comes as Character.AI continues to struggle with financial losses, lawsuits and regulatory investigations concerning its chatbot platform.
On October 12, Character.AI announced that it had voluntarily entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings to facilitate a court-supervised sale.
The company said its board had explored alternatives before determining that a sale represented its best opportunity to maximize stakeholder value.
Character.AI was losing approximately $8 million to $9 million each month before its bankruptcy filing, citing legal expenses and the high costs of computing infrastructure and AI talent.

The company also faces lawsuits from families alleging that its chatbots contributed to harmful interactions involving minors, including cases connected to teen suicides. These are allegations and should not be treated as court-established findings.
On October 14, a group of 40 US state attorneys general urged a Delaware bankruptcy judge to protect children's personal information during Character.AI's asset sale.
New York Attorney General Letitia James raised concerns that sensitive conversations shared by children could potentially be sold during the proceedings.
Reuters reported that Character.AI's attorney Erin Fay acknowledged those concerns and clarified that no buyer had yet offered to purchase the company's user data or operating chatbot business.
Disney's proposed transaction does not include that user data.
Character.AI's Future Remains Uncertain
Although Disney has secured much of Character.AI's workforce, the startup's future remains unresolved.
Forbes reported that competing bids are due November 20, 2026, with an auction proposed for November 23, subject to the bankruptcy court's procedures.
Disney's $20 million proposal serves as an opening bid rather than a completed acquisition, meaning another buyer could submit a competing offer.
Character.AI said its platform remains operational during the proceedings, with existing subscriptions and billing continuing for now.
However, the company acknowledged that the platform could eventually be wound down if the sale process fails to produce a viable proposal for continued operations.
For Disney, the arrangement offers access to AI engineering talent and potentially valuable technology without acquiring Character.AI's consumer platform.
Whether the company uses that expertise to develop interactive storytelling, new fan experiences or other entertainment technologies remains to be seen.
