CES 2026: Google Gemini Powers Samsung Appliances As Console Costs Rise
Updated on Tue, Dec 23, 2025
Here’s what is happening.
At CES 2026, Samsung is set to showcase kitchen appliances powered by Google Gemini, pushing “vision-based AI” deeper into the smart home. At the same time, the video game console industry is facing higher DRAM costs as memory makers prioritize AI data center demand, raising the risk of price hikes and delays. Closing the loop for gamers, Nintendo has launched its “Hits for the Holidays Sale,” offering discounts on Switch and Switch 2 titles.
TL; DR
-
Google debuted Gemini AI in Samsung appliances at CES 2026, bringing advanced food recognition, inventory tracking, and personalized suggestions into everyday smart kitchen experiences.
-
As demand for AI infrastructure rises, memory chip shortages are pressuring video game consoles, increasing costs and raising the likelihood of price hikes or delayed hardware releases.
-
Industry analysts warn that higher DRAM prices could push console prices up 10–15%, while weakening consumer demand already strained by tariffs and limited system-selling titles.
-
Amid hardware uncertainty, Nintendo launched its Hits for the Holidays Sale, offering deep discounts across Switch and Switch 2 titles to sustain player engagement.
What Is Samsung Showing With Gemini At CES 2026?
Samsung said it will unveil its latest kitchen appliances lineup at CES 2026, including the newest Bespoke AI refrigerator (Family Hub), an over-the-range microwave, and a slide-in range.
The headline upgrade is “AI Vision” enhanced with Google Gemini and Google Cloud, positioned to simplify day-to-day kitchen tasks through improved vision-based recognition.
Samsung confirmed this is the first time Google Gemini is being integrated into a refrigerator, starting with the Bespoke AI Refrigerator Family Hub.
Samsung says the upgraded system is designed to recognize more food items, expanding beyond prior on-device recognition limits, and to identify processed foods without requiring separate user registration.
The company also plans to detect user-labeled items, allowing foods stored in personal containers to be added to the food list.
Samsung framed the goal as enabling clearer inventory management and “a truly personalized AI kitchen,” with CES demos expected to highlight new use cases.
Jeong Seung Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of the R&D Team for Samsung’s Digital Appliances Business, said, “In pioneering the application of vision-based AI technology, Samsung has led innovation in the kitchen appliance market,” adding that the Google Cloud collaboration is meant to “deliver better consumer experiences in the upcoming year.”
Samsung will also showcase a Bespoke AI Wine Cellar featuring an AI Vision system built with Gemini, which uses a top-mounted camera to recognize labels, track bottles, and update the SmartThings AI Wine Manager with inventory and pairing suggestions.
While AI is steadily expanding into everyday consumer devices, the same surge in AI adoption is creating new pressures across other hardware-dependent industries.
Why The AI Boom Is Starting To Hit Consoles In The “Memory Race”
The demand for DRAM, used in PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo’s Switch 2, has exceeded supply as the tech sector races to build AI infrastructure.
Memory makers are favoring higher-margin data-center chips, tightening supply for consumer devices and adding fresh pressure to already strained console sales.
Analysts and industry experts state that hardware sold on razor-thin margins may face price increases as component costs rise, even as earlier tariff-linked hikes already tested demand.
Joost van Dreunen (NYU Stern) warned, “Since memory makes up about a fifth of a PC’s total component costs, this hits manufacturers hard,” estimating console sticker prices could rise 10%–15% over the next year or two, while PCs could climb as much as 30% if memory prices jump again in 2026.
Counterpoint Research estimated that memory prices could rise by 30% in the last three months of 2025 and by another 20% early next year, following large increases already seen in 2025.
TrendForce also downgraded its outlook, expecting weaker growth and forecasting a decline for 2026, which compounds the risk of softer hardware momentum.
Circana data show gaming hardware spending fell 27% last month, with unit sales at their weakest level since 1995 and average prices at a record for the month.
Emarketer analyst Jacob Bourne summed up the caution this could trigger: “So instead of risking poor sales, we might see console makers delay releases.”
As hardware pressures mount, attention is shifting toward software-driven value and seasonal sales.
