ChatGPT!

Tired of hearing about this modern marvel? You might as well get used to it creeping into the daily news with its ever-expanding use cases! #NeverGonnaGiveYouUp

It feels like years ago that the newly launched tool gained 1 million users in just 5 days; but that was less than a year ago as ChatGPT was released on November 30, 2022.

Since then, it’s seen massive adoption by professionals in all sorts of industries. In fact, according to Business Standard, a report by B2B Reviews found that over 50% of tech HR employees say they use ChatGPT for a range of tasks. These tasks include training, surveys, performance reviews, recruiting, employee relations and others, with even 10% using it for employee termination processes.

The survey consisting of 213 HR professionals and 792 employees from the tech industry also found that employees saved around 70 minutes a week by using ChatGPT.

This also extends to small businesses, of which 44% think they will hire fewer people in the future due to growing AI capabilities, with around 25% currently testing generative AI tools like ChatGPT (OpenAI), Bard (Google) and Bing (Microsoft).

Essentially, tech companies haven't shied away from adopting technology that could bring about positive changes and the report validates the trend as 70% of HR professionals in the tech industry saying companies will extend funds for such tools.

However, recent reports and reviews have already shown numerous downsides of chatbots and LLMs.

Especially with a host of questionable answers provided in the past, which led to some calling for a pause in its development.

Considering that ChatGPT was trained on content from the internet up till 2021, the results it delivered at times were incorrect or outdated, meaning AI chatbots can’t be used as legitimate sources of information. Additionally, the internet itself is filled with misinformation!

Further long-term drawbacks include limitations in understanding context, accuracy and grammatical errors, lacking common sense and emotional intelligence, templated or biased responses, inability to perform specific tasks, limited knowledge and its infamous ability to create non-existent facts and citations (called AI hallucination)!

“At the end of the day, our most powerful way of protecting ourselves is through awareness, education and a healthy attitude of curiosity (and maybe even suspicion),” says Professor Dan Remenyi, a veteran of several decades in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry.

As with all new technology, it will take time to improve. Experts like Remenyi say, “Some liken chatbot technology to a dancing bear, in that the wonder is not that this technology performs well but that it performs at all. But it is new technology, and it will get better.”
