Billionaire Oracle Co-founder Larry Ellison Says AI Surveillance Will Keep People On Best Behavior
Updated on Tue, Sep 17, 2024
The technology has been used in enhancing security in retail, monitoring traffic in smart cities and more. Essentially, its ability to process and analyze vast amounts of data has led to its increased adoption in surveillance systems.
While this comes with added security, it does raise a wide range of concerns, especially considering ethical and privacy issues.
Yet, this might be the way forward to achieve a world with less crime as per billionaire and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, who has stirred the debate with his recent comments outlining the use of AI-powered surveillance systems to ensure citizens behave appropriately.
So, what did the co-founder say and how will it impact the industry? Let’s explore!
What Did Larry Ellison Say About AI-Powered Surveillance Systems?
-
Larry Ellison, the Co-founder, Executive Chairman and CTO of Oracle, recently spoke about the use of AI in surveillance.
-
As per his comments, he proposed a world where AI-powered cameras and surveillance systems are soon bound to be a reality and will be one where citizens will be on their best behavior.
-
Since these systems can analyze vast amounts of data in real-time, enabling them with the power of AI will help identify and respond to potential threats or bad behavior.
-
This sentiment would also help keep law enforcement in check and will be a crucial element in maintaining order.
-
The billionaire also believes that AI drones will soon replace police cars in high-speed chases, saying “You just have a drone follow the car. It's very simple in the age of autonomous drones.”
-
Ellison’s comments come as Oracle enjoyed a good day at the stock market, rising 5.1% on Monday.
-
This made Ellison the second-richest person in the world, surpassing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, with his net worth growing by $8.1 billion and reaching around $206 billion, as per Forbes’ real-time billionaires list.
-
However, this idea has raised numerous concerns that center around the breach of privacy and civil liberties.
-
Furthermore, with such a world, experts are also questioning its potential for misuse, i.e., spying on people or the dangers posed by cybercriminals.
What Did Larry Ellison and Other Executives Say?
-
Larry Ellison emphasized the benefits of AI-powered surveillance, saying, “We're going to have supervision. Every police officer is going to be supervised at all times, and if there's a problem, AI will report that problem and report it to the appropriate person.”
-
Ellison continued, “The police will be on their best behavior because we’re constantly recording and watching everything that’s going on.”
-
[Contd.] “Citizens will be on their best behavior, because we’re constantly recording everything that is going on. And it’s unimpeachable. The cars have cameras on them. We’re using AI to monitor the video.”
-
[Contd.] “It’s not people that are looking at those cameras; it’s AI that’s looking at the cameras.”
While the use of AI in surveillance comes with benefits for security, public safety, law enforcement, retail, transportation and more, the concerns raised about its ethical implications and privacy breaches will remain a big question.
Will Larry Ellison’s vision of an AI-powered surveillance system lead to a safer world, or will it push society closer to a dystopian reality? Let us know in the comments below!
