Microsoft Announces New AI Hub in London!
Updated on Thu, Apr 11, 2024
This includes regularly updating their products and software, investing in AI resources, building more capable AI chips and just about anything else that can provide them with an edge over their competitors.
Keeping to this thought, Microsoft, the primary backer behind OpenAI, made an announcement that’s set to boost the company’s AI presence in the United Kingdom, while also enhancing the AI industry in the country, through investments, resources, employment opportunities and more.
So, what did the company reveal? Let’s explore!
What Did Microsoft Announce?
-
Less than a month ago, Microsoft announced that Mustafa Suleyman, DeepMind and Inflection Co-founder, along with Karén Simonyan, a Co-founder and Chief Scientist of Inflection, joined Microsoft.
-
The two would help form a new organization called Microsoft AI, which would focus on advancing Microsoft’s Copilot and other consumer AI products and research.
-
While Mustafa would join as EVP and CEO for Microsoft AI and report directly to Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, Karén would join as Chief Scientist and report to Mustafa.
-
Now, Microsoft builds on that announcement with another one, which will see the company open a new AI hub in the heart of London.
-
As per the blog post making the announcement, “Microsoft AI London will drive pioneering work to advance state-of-the-art language models and their supporting infrastructure, and to create world-class tooling for foundation models, collaborating closely with our AI teams across Microsoft and with our partners, including OpenAI.”
-
The AI hub will be based in Microsoft’s London Paddington office and will be led by Jordan Hoffmann, who was an AI scientist, engineer and pioneer at Inflection and DeepMind prior to joining Microsoft.
-
The move comes as Microsoft recognizes the immense talent, expertise and opportunities in the AI sector in the UK, which will be met by plans of significant and long-term investments as the company begins hiring AI scientists and engineers.
-
As per the plan, Microsoft will post job openings in the coming weeks and months.
-
Microsoft already has taken a strong interest in the UK, which includes the Microsoft Research Cambridge lab, the company’s recent announcement of investing $2.5 billion to upskill the country’s workforce and its commitment to bring 20,000 of the most advanced GPUs to the country by 2026.
What Did Microsoft Say About The Move?
-
Through the blog post, Mustafa Suleyman, EVP and CEO of Microsoft AI, said, “This is great news for Microsoft AI and for the UK. As a British citizen, born and raised in London, I’m proud to have co-founded and built a cutting-edge AI business here. I’m deeply aware of the extraordinary talent pool and AI ecosystem in the UK, and I’m excited to make this commitment to the UK on behalf of Microsoft AI.”
-
[Contd.] “I know – through my close work with thought leaders in the UK government, business community and academia – that the country is committed to advancing AI responsibly and with a safety-first commitment to drive investment, innovation and economic growth. Our decision to open this hub in the UK reflects this ambition.”
Do you think this move by Microsoft will help it take the lead and boost its market share in the AI industry?
