The artificial intelligence boom is changing more than just the technology powering new products, and it is also affecting how much those products cost.  As demand for AI infrastructure continues to grow, the rising cost of key components is beginning to reach consumers, with Apple becoming one of the latest companies to adjust its pricing.

TL;DR

  • Apple raised MacBook, iPad, and Apple TV prices, with some models up to 42% costlier.
  • Growing AI demand made chips more expensive, so Apple raised prices
  • Elon Musk supported Apple, calling the component cost surge the biggest he's ever seen.

Apple has increased prices for several MacBook, iPad, and Apple TV models worldwide after rising memory and storage chip costs pushed up manufacturing expenses. The company said the growing demand for semiconductors from AI-focused data centres and cloud computing providers has made it difficult to absorb the higher component costs. The latest price revisions do not affect the iPhone lineup, with Apple yet to announce any changes to smartphone pricing.

Among the revised prices, the base MacBook Air now starts at $1,299 after a $200 increase, while the entry-level MacBook Pro has risen by $300 to $1,999. The MacBook Neo also received a $100 price hike, taking its starting price to $699. On the tablet side, the iPad Air now costs $749 following a $150 increase, while the iPad Pro has gone up by $200 to $1,199. In India, some Apple devices have become up to ₹1 lakh more expensive.

The announcement also drew attention from Tesla and xAI CEO Elon Musk, who responded to Apple's explanation on X. Referring to Apple CEO Tim Cook’s comments to The Wall Street Journal, Musk wrote: “Tim Cook, who told The Wall Street Journal that the jump in costs was unlike anything he had seen ‘in any area in over 40 years’. Biggest price jump in anything I’ve ever seen too.”

Apple's latest pricing changes highlight how the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is beginning to influence the cost of consumer electronics, even as smartphone prices remain unchanged for now.
