Apple Prioritizes Premium iPhones In 2026 While Delaying Standard Model
Updated on Fri, Jan 30, 2026
Apple is rethinking its iPhone launch strategy for 2026, putting its premium models front and center while pushing back the release of its standard device, according to a Nikkei Asia report.
TL;DR
- Apple is expected to focus on high-end iPhones in 2026.
- A foldable iPhone could debut in the late-2026 launch.
- Higher costs and supply issues are influencing Apple’s strategy.
The company is said to be prioritizing production and shipments of its three highest-end iPhone models for the second half of 2026. These include Apple’s first-ever foldable iPhone and two non-folding models expected to feature upgraded cameras and larger displays.
Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 is now planned for release in the first half of 2027.
Nikkei Asia, citing four people familiar with the matter, says the decision is driven by a mix of marketing strategy changes and supply-chain pressures.
Rising costs of memory chips and other materials have made it more critical for Apple to focus resources where margins are strongest. By emphasizing premium devices, Apple aims to maximize revenue and profits while managing tighter component supplies.
The shift also reflects manufacturing realities. The foldable iPhone, a first for Apple, is expected to involve more complex production processes, increasing the risk of delays or yield issues. Staggering the rollout of models could help Apple reduce operational risks while ensuring a smoother supply chain during a demanding launch cycle.
“Supply chain smoothness is one of the key challenges for this year, and the marketing strategy change also played a part in the decision (to prioritize premium models),” an executive at an iPhone supplier with direct knowledge of the plan told Nikkei Asia.
Topics For More Insights:
The timing of the report follows strong financial performance from Apple. The company recently beat Wall Street expectations for quarterly revenue, supported by solid iPhone demand and a notable rebound in China.
If the plans hold, 2026 could mark one of Apple’s most premium-focused iPhone cycles yet, with the standard model taking a back seat for the first time.
