Apple Invests More In AI, OpenAI Grows In Europe & Anthropic Overtakes OpenAI
Updated on Fri, Aug 1, 2025
While enterprises are leaning more heavily into AI, a sharp contrast is emerging on the public front. A new report by Menlo Ventures shows that Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI in enterprise AI model usage, now holding 32% of the market compared to OpenAI’s 25%.
In coding-specific tasks, Anthropic leads by an even wider margin, 42% to OpenAI’s 21%. The shift is largely attributed to the release of Claude 3.5 Sonnet in mid-2024, followed by 3.7 Sonnet earlier this year.
The Menlo report also found a clear preference for closed models among enterprises, with limited use of open-source AI.
Yet, this enterprise momentum stands in contrast to broader adoption trends. According to an AP-NORC poll, just 37% of Americans have used AI for work-related tasks, despite 60% using it for information searches.
Ahead of this, AI is used for idea generation (40%), writing emails (34%), creating or editing images (33%), entertainment (30%), shopping (26%), and companionship (16%).
Among younger adults under 30, adoption is higher across categories like brainstorming and companionship, but work usage still lags. While the tech industry continues to push AI as a productivity tool, the general public, especially older demographics, remains hesitant to bring it into their daily workflow.
As enterprises charge ahead with AI and public adoption inches forward, Apple is signaling it won’t be left behind.
On its Q3 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said the company is “significantly growing” AI investments and reallocating teams to focus on the technology.
“We see AI as one of the most profound technologies of our lifetime,” Cook noted, highlighting Apple’s strategy to embed AI across devices and platforms.
Apple’s AI push is also influencing its CapEx spend and acquisition pace, with seven companies this year alone. While some AI features are delayed, Cook emphasized the importance of getting it right over rushing to market.
With Apple investing heavily in AI and enterprise demand on the rise, OpenAI is expanding its footprint in Europe.
OpenAI announced plans to launch Stargate Norway, its first European AI data center, in partnership with British firm Nscale and Norwegian energy company Aker. Located near Narvik, the facility will run entirely on renewable hydropower and use direct-to-chip liquid cooling.
Backed by a $1 billion investment, the project aims to support Europe’s push for sovereign compute. Though separate from the EU’s official AI plans, OpenAI says Norway’s startups and researchers will get early access. The center is expected to reach 290 MW capacity by 2026, powered by 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs.
“The facility will run entirely on renewable power and is expected to incorporate closed-loop, direct-to-chip liquid cooling to ensure maximum cooling efficiency. Additionally, excess heat from the GPU systems will be made available to support low-carbon enterprises in the region,” OpenAI added.
From these scenarios, do you think companies are moving ahead with AI faster than people?
