Overall Rating
Apple introduced a refreshed Studio Display alongside an all-new Studio Display XDR, expanding its external monitor lineup for Mac users.

The new family targets everyone from everyday creators to high-end professionals, bringing upgraded camera systems, enhanced audio, Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, and advanced mini-LED display technology.

The reveal came as part of Apple's event week, with the main day set for March 4 from 9 a.m. Eastern Time onwards.

This year's event breaks from its traditional keynote-style livestream. Instead of hosting a single broadcast event, the company is organizing what it calls a “special Apple Experience” for invited media across New York, London, and Shanghai.

Meanwhile, the general public can follow along digitally as Apple publishes announcements throughout the day via its Newsroom and official social media channels.

TL;DR

  • Apple launches updated Studio Display and new Studio Display XDR
  • Studio Display XDR features 27-inch 5K Retina XDR, 2000 nits peak HDR, 120Hz
  • Both models include 12MP Center Stage camera and Thunderbolt 5
  • Prices start at $1,599 for Studio Display and $3,299 for XDR
  • Pre-orders begin March 4, availability starts March 11

Both Studio Display and Studio Display XDR are available with standard glass or optional nano-texture glass for challenging lighting conditions.

Studio Display starts at $1,599 in the United States and $1,499 for education. Studio Display XDR replaces Pro Display XDR and starts at $3,299, or $3,199 for education customers.

Pre-orders begin March 4 via Apple’s online store and Apple Store app in 35 countries and regions, including the U.S., with retail availability starting March 11.

Apple also highlighted environmental considerations, noting the use of 100% recycled aluminum in the stands and 80% recycled glass in the standard glass option. The packaging is fully fiber-based and designed for easier recycling.

TechDogs-"An Image Of Apple's New New Studio Display And Studio Display XDR With Thunderbolt 5 And 5K Retina XDR"

Studio Display Positioned As A Versatile Mac Companion

The updated Studio Display centers around a 27-inch 5K Retina panel with more than 14 million pixels, 600 nits of brightness, and P3 wide color. Designed for workflows such as photo editing, coding, music production, and video creation, it integrates with macOS to deliver a streamlined experience.

A key upgrade is the 12MP Center Stage camera, now improved for better image quality and equipped with Desk View, whcih enables users to show both themselves and a top-down view of their workspace during video calls.

The display also includes a studio-quality three-microphone array and a six-speaker system with four force-canceling woofers that deliver 30% deeper bass than the previous generation, along with two tweeters and support for Spatial Audio.

Connectivity sees a boost with Thunderbolt 5. The display includes two Thunderbolt 5 ports and two USB-C ports, allowing users to daisy-chain up to four Studio Displays for nearly 60 million combined pixels.

With the included Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable, the display delivers up to 96W of charging power, enough to fast-charge a 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Studio Display XDR Brings Mini-LED, 2000 Nits HDR And 120Hz Refresh Rate

The new Studio Display XDR is positioned as Apple’s most advanced professional monitor. It features a 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display with 5120 by 2880 resolution and a mini-LED backlight system powered by 2,304 local dimming zones.

The panel supports up to 1000 nits of sustained SDR brightness and 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, alongside a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. This wide dynamic range reduces halo and blooming effects while enhancing detail in both bright and dark scenes.

The display also introduces a 120Hz refresh rate with Adaptive Sync, which dynamically adjusts between 47Hz and 120Hz. This improves responsiveness for motion-heavy tasks such as video editing, 3D rendering, and graphically intense gaming.

In terms of color, Studio Display XDR supports both P3 and Adobe RGB wide color gamuts from a single preset. This delivers over 80% Rec. 2020 coverage, making it suitable for HDR video editing, color grading, and print-focused design workflows.

Apple also introduced DICOM medical imaging presets and a Medical Imaging Calibrator for diagnostic radiology use. The calibrator is pending FDA clearance in the United States and is expected to be available soon, enabling radiologists to view diagnostic images directly on Studio Display XDR.

Camera, Audio, Connectivity And Stand Options

Studio Display XDR carries the same 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, three-microphone array with directional beamforming, and six-speaker Spatial Audio system found in the standard model.

It includes two Thunderbolt 5 ports and two USB-C ports for high-speed accessories and display daisy-chaining.

The included Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable provides up to 140W of charging power, enough to fast-charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro. The display can also function as a Thunderbolt hub to reduce cable clutter in professional setups.

A tilt and height-adjustable stand with a 105mm range is included, featuring a counterbalancing arm for smoother adjustments. Users can also opt for a VESA mount adapter for customized desk setups.
