Recently, Amazon bragged about deploying over a million robots that sort, lift, carry packages, and carry out other tasks, as part of an initiative that goes back as far as 2012.

Now, the company has come forth with plans to cut down its workforce.

However, this cut is expected to impact corporate jobs.

Through a message shared with employees—which now sits as a news release published on its website—Amazon’s SVP of People Experience and Technology, Beth Galetti, informed its employees that the company is set to make organizational changes that will “affect some of our teammates.”

The move builds on a note published by Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, which expressed his wishes on how the company should operate like the world’s largest startup. This also included possessing structures the drove speed and ownership and “the need to be set up to invent, collaborate, be connected, and deliver the absolute best for customers.”

While Amazon plans to reduce its team in some areas and grow in key strategic areas, the move will come with an overall reduction in its corporate workforce of approximately 14,000 roles.

Prior to Amazon’s confirmation, numerous reports emerged claiming the total number of job cuts were expected to be 30,000. Still, it marks the largest job reduction at the company since 2023, and is expected to impact roles across human resources, operations, devices and services, and more.

Most workers who will be relieved of duty will be offered 90 days to look for a new role internally and will be prioritized by recruitment teams in such efforts.

Others who choose not to stick by the company or are unable to secure jobs internally will be offered transition support, including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits, and more.

“The reductions we’re sharing today are a continuation of this work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets and what matters most to our customers’ current and future needs,” Galetti said in the message.

Recently, Amazon’s AWS was identified as the culprit behind the massive internet outage that crippled over 1,000 apps and websites, such as Snapchat, Facebook, Signal, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Duolingo, Canva, Fortnite, Epic Games Store, Roblox, Zoom, Coinbase, United Airlines, T-Mobile, Starbucks, McDonald's, banking apps, and more, and included several Amazon services.

The incident drew criticism from cloud computing experts, who pointed at Amazon’s lack of expertise and experience that came from layoffs due to the transition to GenAI.

Ahead of Amazon, layoffs are expected to hit Paramount Skydance, where the number of affected employees would be 1,000, as per sources familiar with the matter.

The move follows the $8.4 billion merger between Skydance Media and Paramount Global and will impact roughly 5% of Paramount's employees.

Education technology firm Chegg—which offers textbook rentals, homework help, and tutoring—also reported it will cut 388 roles globally, which represents about 45% of its workforce.

The reduction comes as the company aims to reduce costs and streamline operations, as it moves towards AI-powered tools.

Amid these major layoffs, reports emerged that Elon Musk could leave Tesla if his proposed $1 trillion pay package was not approved, as per a letter penned by Chair Robyn Denholm to shareholders, with the appeal coming just ahead of the company's November 6 annual meeting.

Do you think the latest round of layoffs will cause more problems for companies than they will solve?
