Amazon Prime Air Drone Delivery To Reach Nearly 500 US Cities And Towns By End Of 2026
Updated on Thu, Aug 20, 2026
Amazon is preparing a major expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery service, with plans to reach nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States by the end of 2026, around six times its current footprint.
The expansion could bring autonomous deliveries in as fast as 30 minutes to communities covering tens of millions of Amazon customers.
TL;DR
- Amazon plans to expand Prime Air to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026.
- The service currently operates from 11 locations covering 10 metro areas across seven states.
- Eligible products can arrive in as fast as 30 minutes, while Amazon says hundreds of thousands of packages have already been delivered by drone this year.
According to Amazon's official announcement, Prime Air currently operates from 11 U.S. sites covering 10 metro areas across Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas. Each site serves an area of around 175 square miles.
Amazon plans to add the Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise metro areas soon, followed by more communities during the remainder of 2026. However, the company notes that coverage can vary by ZIP code and not every address within an eligible ZIP code will necessarily qualify.
“Prime Air provides them an even speedier option when they need it, with deliveries in as fast as 30 minutes,” said David Carbon, vice president of Amazon Prime Air.
Carbon also said Amazon has delivered hundreds of thousands of packages using drones this year and intends to reach customers across nearly 500 cities and towns by year-end.
Artificial Intelligence News highlighted the autonomous technology supporting the expansion, particularly Prime Air's Detect-and-Avoid system. The technology continuously scans the drone's surroundings and allows it to identify obstacles and make real-time flight decisions without requiring a person to monitor each aircraft.
The drones also use onboard cameras and sensors for navigation, obstacle detection, and deliveries. Amazon says these cameras do not track people or record their movements, while their data is processed onboard rather than transmitted as a live video feed for human monitoring.
Prime Air operates under Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 certification, the regulatory framework used for commercial air carriers. Amazon says the certification supports its ability to scale drone delivery operations while maintaining aviation safety requirements.
ITP.net similarly described the latest announcement as Amazon accelerating Prime Air's shift from more limited deployments toward wider commercial use of autonomous drone delivery across the United States.
What Can Amazon Prime Air Deliver?
Most Prime Air locations offer eligible products spanning groceries, electronics, cosmetics, medications, and household goods. Amazon says nearly all products weighing five pounds or less and fitting inside a large shoebox can qualify, representing more than 60% of the items customers most frequently buy from the company.
Orders can arrive in as fast as 30 minutes, although Amazon says most drone orders arrive around 60 minutes after checkout.
Topics for more insights:
Prime members receive free drone delivery on orders of $50 or more. Orders below $50 carry a $2.99 fee for Prime members, while customers without Prime pay $4.99.
Customers use the regular Amazon shopping experience to select drone delivery where available and choose an eligible delivery point. When the drone arrives, it checks that the area is clear of people, pets, and vehicles before releasing the package.
The planned rollout would mark a substantial change in the scale of Prime Air. What remains to be seen is how quickly Amazon can bring all of the planned communities online before the end of 2026 while maintaining eligibility, infrastructure, regulatory, and operational requirements.
