It’s the age of technology and almost all businesses are turning to digital transformation in hopes of speeding up their workflows.

Along with recent innovations such as generative artificial intelligence and blockchain among others, one prominent sector of the last few years has been quantum computing.

Of course, quantum computers aren’t exactly cheap to build or maintain. This is why only a handful of companies, organizations, institutes and governments are engaged in developing the new-age technology.

However, while some are stepping up their efforts, some are also stepping down their interests. This is where Alibaba Group stands with its latest announcement.

What’s the company planning? Let’s explore:

What’s Alibaba’s Latest Announcement On Quantum Computing?

  • According to recent reports, the Chinese tech giant has shut its Quantum Computing research laboratory in Hangzhou, resulting in the company letting go of over 30 employees.

  • A spokesperson for Alibaba’s DAMO Academy (Academy for Discovery, Adventure, Momentum and Outlook), which is an in-house research initiative that included the lab, said it would continue its efforts to become a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) research.

  • Alibaba will donate the lab and its equipment to Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, which will try to recruit the employees let go by Alibaba to further its own quantum research.

  • It’s believed that Alibaba has been engaged in the quantum computing market since 2015 and has invested over $15 billion in the emerging technology.

  • The move stems from profitability and budgeting constraints, as the company looks to restructure.

What Other Restructuring Efforts Has Alibaba Undertaken?

  • In March Alibaba conveyed plans of splitting its business into six units with a spin-off for its cloud division, which would be listed by May 2024.
  • In addition to the Cloud Intelligence Group, the other groups would include Taobao Tmall Commerce Group, Global Digital Commerce Group, Local Services Group, Cainiao Smart Logistics Group and Digital Media and Entertainment Group.
  • However, a few days ago, the company shelved plans to split up into divisions, with the cause believed to be uncertainties accruing from geopolitical tensions, particularly the US-China one, in which USA is looking to control exports on AI chips to China.
  • The sudden move to ditch the split-up plans resulted in a $20 billion decline in Alibaba Group's market value, with its shares falling 10% in Hong Kong.
  • The restructuring efforts are being led by Joseph Tsai (Chairman) and Eddie Wu (CEO), who are said to be close confidents of Alibaba founder Jack Ma.

What Did Alibaba Say About Scrapping Some Of Its Restructuring Plans?

  • In a statement, Alibaba said, “In October 2023, the United States expanded its export control rules to further restrict the export to China of advanced computing chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. We believe that these new restrictions may materially and adversely affect Cloud Intelligence Group’s ability to offer products and services and to perform under existing contracts, thereby negatively affecting our results of operations and financial condition. These new restrictions may also affect our businesses more generally by limiting our ability to upgrade our technological capabilities”
  • Regarding its Cloud Intelligence Group plans, it said, “Cloud Intelligence Group The recent expansion of U.S. restrictions on export of advanced computing chips has created uncertainties for the prospects of Cloud Intelligence Group.”
  • [Contd.] We believe that a full spin-off of Cloud Intelligence Group may not achieve the intended effect of shareholder value enhancement. Accordingly, we have decided to not proceed with a full spin-off, and instead we will focus on developing a sustainable growth model for Cloud Intelligence Group under the fluid circumstances.”

Do you think the exit of a major technology company like Alibaba could hamper research and development in the quantum computing industry?
