a16z's Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps Report Crowns ChatGPT As AI Race Heats Up

Every major wave in technology has its defining moment: the personal computer, the internet, the smartphone, and now personal AI assistants.

While tech trends come and go, generative AI has proven that it’s here to stay. In just a short span, it has shifted from futuristic demos to everyday tools that people use as frequently as their browsers, spreadsheets, and social media apps.

When ChatGPT burst onto the scene in late 2022, it quickly became the face of generative AI for millions of users worldwide. We are sure you remember typing a prompt for the first time and watching answers appear, as if by magic.

Well, two and a half years later, OpenAI’s chatbot is no longer alone at the top. Rivals like Google’s Gemini, xAI’s Grok, and, to a lesser extent, Meta AI, are beginning to close the gap, according to the latest consumer AI report from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).

Andreessen Horowitz’s latest Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps report, now in its fifth edition, takes stock of this shift, revealing which platforms define the moment and where the momentum in consumer AI is really heading.

It’s evident that the market is stabilizing, with some building proprietary AI models, while others rely on open-source or aggregated systems. The bottom line is that several brands have managed to carve out a niche in the consumer AI space.

For the fifth consecutive time, 14 names held their place in the rankings, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Poe, Character AI, Midjourney, Leonardo, Veed, Cutout, ElevenLabs, Photoroom, Gamma, QuillBot, Civitai, and Hugging Face.

Together, they represent the diverse ways consumers now engage with AI, from general assistance and companionship to image and video editing, voice generation, productivity, and even model hosting.

Five AI tools have been featured in every edition since the second report: Claude, DeepAI, Janitor AI, Pixelcut, and Suno, spanning AI’s spread into music generation, creative editing, and personal AI companions.

One of the biggest shifts this year comes from Google. For the first time, its AI products appear as separate entries, now that they operate under distinct domains. Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs all made the list of top generative AI consumer web products, signaling the company’s growing presence in the market.


Its Gemini product climbed to the #2 spot in web traffic, with approximately 12% of ChatGPT’s volume.

The “Brink List,” which tracks apps that nearly cracked the Top 100, highlighted fast risers such as Lovable, jumping to #22 on the web list while PolyBuzz and Pixverse graduated into the main rankings for mobile.

A new category dubbed “vibe coding” tools is gaining ground as platforms like Lovable, Cursor, Replit, and Bolt are drawing users with their AI-assisted coding experiences that feel collaborative rather than mechanical.

The report also sheds light on how the rankings are measured, with a16z relying on third-party intelligence firms Similarweb to track web usage and Sensor Tower to measure mobile app performance, offering a data-driven snapshot of the consumer AI space.

All in all, generative AI has moved from experimental playgrounds into a maturing market where staying power matters as much as novelty. ChatGPT may still dominate, but the consumer AI market is broadening as new rivals emerge.

The top 100 list makes one thing clear: consumer AI isn’t just a trend, but an industry for how consumers interact with AI technologies.

What started as one standout chatbot has evolved into an ecosystem of tools serving a range of needs, from productivity to creativity and companionship. The competition is heating up, and the true winners are consumers who now have more choices than ever.
