Overview

We bet you remember the 1990 comedy movie, Home Alone. Well, it had an equally iconic sequel in 1992, that was an enjoyable watch for everyone. Especially kids since they would have wanted to secure their homes the same way Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) defended his house alone from a pair of scheming thieves! #WeKnowYouRemember

He did this by setting a range of traps for them to fall prey to and injure themselves. However, this also posed a risk to himself, as he had to be present physically to deploy most of the traps and schemes.

Yet, had he used edge devices, he could’ve deployed the traps remotely, sitting in a comfortable chair and munching on some popcorn. In fact, he could’ve automated the entire process using precise sensors blended with a robust management platform. Yet, sadly, the technology did not exist back in the early 1990s.

For us modern folks, Edge Computing Software makes it possible to gather, analyze and process data using such sensors and edge devices. In fact, we can analyze data close to the originating source, enabling faster decision-making and reduced transmission time for information and insights to be served from a cloud server. Cool, right?

So, if you’re looking for the right tool for your enterprise, read on to learn the top 5 Edge Computing Software of 2024!

Betty woke up early to prepare breakfast for her family before they left for the day. Then, she had a client meeting – but wait, she also had to start a load of laundry in the washing machine and start the dishwasher before lunchtime! Safe to say, it will be a hectic and tiresome day for her.

All Betty wants to do is sit on the couch and enjoy her favorite TV show – but wait, she forgot to turn off the lights in the kitchen. She doesn’t want to walk all the way back right as the commercials end, you know? Another tiresome day for her!

Luckily, she installed IoT-enabled smart lights which she can turn on and off using her smartphone. At the same time, she switches the light off - a metaphorical light goes off above her head. She has an idea!

If lights can be centrally controlled, perhaps they could be automated with sensors – and so could other devices. Of course, in Betty’s case, her machines are a few feet away and you may call her lazy. (Just kidding!)

For businesses, the distance between users and machines could be feet, miles, countries and even continents away (maybe planets soon?). Imagine having to send people all around a factory just to push a simple button!

Luckily, we live in an age of Edge Computing Software, which allows businesses to control applications and machines at their source, bringing faster insights, better response times, improved availability, decreased data bandwidths and latency among other benefits.

Essentially, this enables computing, analysis and processing capabilities at the same location where a device or machine collects data from, instead of having to send information to a cloud server and endpoint client (user). That’s why businesses need Edge Computing Software!

Last year we explored the Top 5 Edge Computing Software Of 2023. Now, let’s take a look at the Top 5 Edge Computing Software Of 2024.
