Buckle up, folks! In a surprising twist, Ford and Tesla have joined forces to spark a revolution in electric mobility charging technology! Together, they aim to create a charging infrastructure to make your electric vehicle zoom into the future. This shocking collaboration will surely leave you electrified (pun intended!)

Let’s get ‘charging.’

Pod Point defines EV charging as the process of using EV charging equipment to deliver electricity to the car’s battery. An EV charging station taps into the electrical grid to charge an Electric Vehicle. The technical term for EV charging stations is electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). Electric vehicles have a Type 1 or Type 2 socket for slow/fast charging and CHAdeMO or CCS (used by Tesla) for DC rapid charging.

According to reports, Ford owners can now use an adaptor to gain access to CCS-type Tesla Supercharging stations in the United States and Canada, expanding their charging options to over 45,000 connectors worldwide. Ford plans to release its next-generation electric vehicles, which will include Tesla's charging connector, allowing customers to charge at Tesla Superchargers without an adapter.

“It seems totally ridiculous that we have an infrastructure problem, and we can’t even agree on what plug to use,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said, noting that Tesla’s charging plug is different from that used by other automakers. “I think the first step is to work together in a way we haven’t, probably with the new EV brands and the traditional auto companies.”

While this is good news for the electric mobility industry, competitors quickly realized that they need to catch up with the Ford-Tesla partnership or be out of the EV race!
Companies like BYD and GM, both one of the industry leaders in electric vehicles, have begun strategizing in lieu of the collaboration, certain that it will neither disrupt the market nor slow down the progress of other manufacturers.

Without specifically addressing Farley's comments, General Motors shared a statement saying, “(General Motors) believes that open charging networks and standards are the best way forward to enable EV adoption across the industry.” GM said it is working with a group of companies and SAE International, formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers, to develop and continue to refine an open connector standard for CCS, which it said was important for “the buildout of an open network of fast charging across North America.”
