What’s all the latest Tesla news about? Let’s explore:

What Boost Is Tesla’s Charging Infrastructure Getting From Automakers?

  • As the list of automakers adopting Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) continues to grow, there’s a new name among the list – Toyota.

  • Toyota announced it reached an agreement with Tesla to incorporate the NACS port into its electric vehicles starting from 2025.

  • This will cover its luxury brand Lexus too as customers with existing Toyota and Lexus electric vehicles using the Combined Charging System (CCS) (i.e., without the NACS ports) will be offered NACS adapters.

  • Essentially, Toyota and Lexus users will be able to access over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America.

  • This adds to the list of automakers who have already made a move to incorporate the NACS port in their vehicles, which includes BMW, which recently announced it would incorporate the standard for all its EVs in the US and Canada.

  • Going back a few months, Ford, General Motors (GM) and Honda also stated their intent to make the switch in 2025, with current users being able to use an adapter.

  • Hyundai will make the same move in 2024 for US customers and 2025 for Canadian users.

  • Adding to this list are automakers Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, Mercedes and Jaguar.

What Boost Is Tesla Getting From Charging Station Providers?

  • ChargePoint, a leading EV charging infrastructure provider, said that it is rolling out support for Tesla’s NACS connector.

  • While the move was announced earlier in the year, support for the standard has begun, with most of the lineup delivery is set to be completed over the next month.

  • The company offers over 48,000 EV charging stations across the world and, according to the company, “now offers every necessary cable solution to charge an EV in North America and Europe.”

  • ChargePoint’s rival Electrify America also announced a similar move, however, it announced it would be making the change by 2025.

  • Speaking on the move, Pasquale Romano, CEO of ChargePoint, said, “With more than 35 million historical ChargePoint sessions initiated by Tesla vehicles, we saw the need to offer native connector solutions for this large portion of the EV market.”

  • [Contd.] “Our support for both installed and new products opens up ChargePoint’s DC chargers to millions of drivers who have not yet had a fast-charging alternative to the Tesla ecosystem and makes their AC charging experience more convenient.”

Furthermore, the company announced its capital expenditure for 2023 would exceed the $7 billion to $9 billion target it had planned this year, as it looks to increase output.

What do you make of the widespread adoption of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS)? Do you think this gives the EV company a boost over its industrial competitors?
