The AI race has reached a truly competitive stage, with players across the globe looking to edge out their rivals.

Among the various breakthroughs, reasoning techniques have helped AI models achieve new heights in math, inference, and coding tasks. In fact, AI leaders believe that reasoning models will be a key component of AI agents - autonomous systems that can perform tasks without any human intervention.

While reasoning models are expensive to develop, leading AI businesses are doubling down on the effort. So, who are the latest players entering the AI reasoning model space?

Dive in!

The Newest AI Reasoning Models On The Market

Well, Google has stepped up its game by introducing its Gemini 2.5 Pro Experimental model, with a clear focus on developing the most capable AI reasoning systems.

Google has experimented with AI reasoning models before, with the release of a “thinking” version of Gemini in December 2024. However, Gemini 2.5 represents the company’s most serious attempt at besting OpenAI’s “o” series of models–with the latest GPT-4o recently getting advanced image generation capabilities.

So, what did Google announce about its “most intelligent AI model?”

What Is Gemini 2.5 Pro All About?

Gemini 2.5 Pro Experimental marks a significant leap in Google's AI development. What sets this model apart is its enhanced reasoning capability, a feature achieved by allowing the AI to "think" before reaching a conclusion.

This approach is designed to improve accuracy and reliability, particularly in complex tasks like coding and problem-solving. Developers and AI enthusiasts can now access this model via Google AI Studio or through the Gemini app with a Gemini Advanced subscription.

The company emphasizes that Gemini 2.5 Pro is built to excel in creating visually compelling web applications and agentic coding applications. To support this claim, Google cites performance benchmarks.

For instance, on the Aider Polyglot code editing evaluation, Gemini 2.5 Pro achieved a score of 68.6%, surpassing models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and DeepSeek. However, in the SWE-bench Verified software development test, it scored 63.8%, lagging behind Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet with a score of 70.3%.

Furthermore, Google tested Gemini 2.5 Pro on Humanity’s Last Exam, a multimodal evaluation covering mathematics, humanities, and natural sciences. The model surpassed numerous competing flagship models with a score of 18.8%.

This accomplishment demonstrates the AI model's adaptability and capacity to tackle a broad variety of intellectual tasks. Yet, that’s not even its most innovative feature.

A Game-Changer For AI Processing

Gemini 2.5 Pro's extensive context window, which initially supports 1 million tokens, or around 750,000 words, is one of its standout features. This vast capacity allows the model to process and analyze large amounts of information in a single instance, a crucial advantage for handling complex projects. Google plans to double this capacity to 2 million tokens soon, further enhancing the model's ability to manage extensive data sets and offer an advantage over other reasoning models.

While Google has not yet released pricing details for the Gemini 2.5 Pro API, they have indicated that more information will be available in the coming weeks. Despite Google's AI model demonstrating strong capabilities, the competition remains fierce.

With various AI companies looking to push the limits, DeepSeek's upgraded V3 model is a serious contender to usurp Google and OpenAI’s lead.

Deepseek Joins The AI Reasoning Race

Beyond the anticipation surrounding Google's Gemini 2.5, the AI landscape is seeing rapid developments from other key players, including trailblazing Chinese AI startup DeepSeek.

DeepSeek has also made waves with the release of its upgraded V3 large language model (LLM), DeepSeek-V3-0324. This model, accessible through the Hugging Face AI development platform, represents a significant advancement in DeepSeek’s offerings.

With a focus on improving reasoning and coding capabilities, DeepSeek V3’s benchmark tests show enhanced performance across various technical metrics. The V3 model, released in December 2024, and followed by the R1 model in January 2025, shows its dedication to continuous and quick innovation.

Whether DeepSeek can outperform Google’s Gemini 2.5 soon is a question that’s on everyone’s minds.

What Does An Increasingly Competitive AI Landscape Mean?

The competition between Google, DeepSeek, and other players, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, is driving rapid advancements in AI technologies. The recent developments are not just about improving performance benchmarks but about creating AI systems that can reason, understand, think, and solve complex problems more effectively.

The simultaneous release of Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro Experimental and DeepSeek’s upgraded V3 model highlights the dynamic and competitive nature of the AI race. With both looking to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve, enhanced AI reasoning capabilities seem to be at the forefront.

The AI race is well underway, and its pace shows no signs of slowing down!

Do you think AI reasoning models will fundamentally change how we interact with AI technology? Can new players like DeepSeek take on established giants like Google?
