The AI Council Looks To Ban AI. Should Businesses Be Worried?

Get ready for an ultimate #ArtificialIntelligenceShowdown as the debate over powerful artificial general intelligence (AGI) takes center stage. According to a report, a government AI Council member has sparked controversy by suggesting that some AGI systems may need to be banned soon. Wait, what?
Marc Warner, a member of the government's AI Council and CEO of Faculty AI emphasized the necessity of strong transparency, audit requirements and enhanced safety technology for AGI. He urged cautious decision-making on AGI in the next six months to a year.
This statement comes after the European Union and the United States jointly called for a voluntary code of practice for AI. It also comes on the heels of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acknowledging the need for "guardrails" after being criticized for lacking a dedicated watchdog for AI regulation.

For instance, recently, OpenAI's ChatGPT saw a chat-tastrophic change in its reputation after giving incorrect answers. Well, another AI-powered chatbot experienced a data leak due to a bug in its source code. The vulnerability in the Redis open-source library used by ChatGPT allowed some users to access titles from another user's chat history. The list goes on...
Critics also argue that concerns about AGI divert attention from real problems associated with current technologies, such as bias in AI recruitment and facial recognition tools. Warner also acknowledged that governments, not technology companies and businesses, should decide to ban algorithms of a certain complexity or computational capacity.

However, some worry that excessive regulation or a complete ban could deter investors and hinder AI innovation in the UK. Warner believed that encouraging safety measures could give the UK a competitive advantage and that safety is integral to deriving value from technology, just as functional engines are essential for airplanes.
Alex Loizou, a critic of government AI regulation, says that any innovation takes time to develop and for us to understand how best to use it. Alex Loizou told CNBC on the sidelines of the Web Summit tech conference in Lisbon, “So regulating it too soon may very well have a significant negative effect on it, so give it time to expand, give it time to evolve until we figure it out what we can use it for and then we can think about ways to regulate it.”
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if this action will be a banned-aid to avoid future risks.
Do you think balancing regulation and innovation will remain a key challenge for governments and businesses? How can we safely and responsibly develop AI technologies such as AGI? Let us know in the comments section below!
