Spotify is reportedly planning to launch its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered music remix and cover creation service in the first quarter of 2027, potentially charging Premium subscribers an additional $4 to $5 monthly to create personalized versions of existing songs.

The development comes as Spotify looks to expand its AI offerings beyond music discovery and recommendations, while building a new revenue stream for the streaming platform, record labels, artists, and songwriters.

Here's what the reports reveal.

TL;DR

  • Spotify is reportedly targeting a Q1 2027 launch for its AI-powered music remix and cover creation service.
  • The feature could cost Premium subscribers an additional $4 to $5 per month.
  • Users could transform existing songs into different styles or create AI-generated covers.
  • Participating artists would receive royalties, with licensing agreements playing a central role in the rollout.

Reuters reported the development, noting that the company is considering unveiling the service around the Grammy Awards in February 2027.

However, the proposed launch timeline remains subject to change, and Spotify has not officially announced a specific release date.

The service would allow paying subscribers to use generative AI to create their own versions of existing songs, opening new possibilities for music personalization and fan engagement.

For example, users could transform a folk song into a dance track or create an AI-generated cover that makes one artist appear to perform another artist's music.

Unlike AI music generation platforms that focus on creating entirely new songs, Spotify's proposed service would center on modifying existing recordings from participating artists.

Reports also indicate that Spotify is considering charging an additional $4 to $5 per month for access to these capabilities.

This would make the service a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers rather than a standard feature included in their existing subscriptions.

While Spotify previously confirmed that the AI remix tool would be a paid Premium add-on, the reported monthly price has not been finalized.

Spotify's AI Remix Plans Depend On Music Licensing Agreements

A major part of Spotify's strategy involves securing permission from music rights holders and ensuring that artists receive compensation when their work is used to create AI-generated content.

According to Reuters, Spotify has reached licensing agreements with Universal Music Group (UMG), independent music licensing organization Merlin, and French music company Believe for the remix initiative.

However, negotiations with Sony Music and Warner Music are reportedly continuing.

Under the proposed model, royalties generated through fan-created remixes would flow back to original artists, while streams of these versions could also count toward the original recordings in Spotify's charts.

This approach could give participating musicians additional revenue opportunities while allowing fans to interact with existing music in new ways.

Artist participation remains an important part of the arrangement, as licensing agreements with record companies do not automatically mean that every artist's work will be available for AI remixing.

Spotify's existing agreements are designed around voluntary participation, allowing eligible artists and songwriters to decide whether their work can be used for these AI-powered creations.

The company had already announced its partnership with Universal Music Group in May 2026, outlining plans for a generative AI tool that would let Premium subscribers create licensed covers and remixes.

At the time, Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström said, "What we're building is grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part."

The announcement emphasized that participating creators would benefit financially from AI-generated covers and remixes in addition to their existing Spotify earnings.

Spotify Looks To Turn AI Music Creation Into A New Revenue Stream

The reported launch window represents another step in Spotify's efforts to turn generative AI into a commercial feature within its streaming ecosystem.

Rather than limiting AI to recommendations and playlist experiences, the proposed tool could transform subscribers from passive listeners into creators of personalized music.

For Spotify, charging an additional monthly fee would introduce another subscription revenue opportunity, while licensed remixing could help music rights holders benefit from AI-generated versions of copyrighted recordings.

The initiative also raises important questions about how generative AI can be integrated into the music industry without undermining artists' control over their work.

Securing licensing agreements, ensuring artist consent, and establishing royalty arrangements will therefore be central to the service's potential rollout.

Despite the reported progress, several details remain unclear, including the final subscription price, participating artist catalogs, regional availability, and exact launch date.

For now, the first quarter of 2027 remains a reported target rather than a confirmed launch schedule, as Spotify continues working toward a commercial rollout of its AI-powered music remix service.
