Retail Industry Is Levelling Up Shopping Experiences But Is It Ethical?
Updated on Mon, Jun 12, 2023
Well, this scenario might be hypothetical but J. Crew, the renowned fashion retailer, is all set to make it true!
According to a recent report, J. Crew is taking online shopping to new heights by launching a virtual beach house in celebration of its 40th anniversary. Teaming up with the experiential Ecommerce platform Obsess, J. Crew aims to create immersive and engaging customer experiences in a virtual setting.
Derek Yarbrough, the chief marketing officer of J. Crew and Madewell, highlighted the company's intention to celebrate its anniversary with a series of events. "With Obsess, we were really looking to have an exciting activation that we could execute for a larger audience and reach more of the people who love the brand in a bigger way," Yarbrough said in an interview with CNBC. "We really wanted this to be a passport to explore the world of J. Crew ... and as the team brainstormed on it, it was a little bit of a no-brainer to take the form of a beach house."
While the concept of gamification in retail offers exciting opportunities for increased customer engagement, retailers must consider its ethical implementation. For instance, unethical gamification practices can deceive customers for profit, creating an environment that coerces them into actions they may not truly desire.
Besides, a report states that as games in the retail industry become more advanced, there's a growing concern that players might forget they're dealing with real consequences and not just Monopoly money. It's like when a college student gets their first credit card and gets caught up in the excitement of rewards without considering the long-term debt and payment realities.
Gamification can be a double-edged sword, possibly bringing great benefits but also causing significant and irreversible harm to younger generations.
An academic paper by Wan Kim & Kevin Werbach, et al. in 2022 says gamified components can “push people to accomplish more than their position requires.” It describes circumstances where an enterprise may exploit the social environment to get more work done without a tangible reward for the customer.
Following the mantra of #LetsLookAtTheBrightSide, let’s not forget that J. Crew is undoubtedly opening the gates for better opportunities and experiences for shoppers!
