Updated on Fri, May 17, 2024
At the same time AI companies are on their toes having to update their products and services, while also innovating to provide more than their competitors and further AI technology and generative AI models.
One of these avenues includes training their AI models on updated and diverse data, which is available abundantly on the internet, however, AI companies are restricted by privacy and copyright laws.
This is where AI companies look to partner with content platforms to acquire a mountain of diverse training data and that’s just what OpenAI is looking to do with the popular social networking site, Reddit.
So, what are the two companies doing? Let’s explore!
What Did OpenAI And Reddit Announce?
-
Recently, reports had emerged that Reddit was working with an AI company after striking a $60 million content licensing deal and while the company was unnamed, it was rumored to be Google.
-
This report and rumor came just before the company’s highly anticipated IPO launch, which witnessed a mixed reception at the market
-
Now, the social networking platform has signed a partnership with OpenAI to bring its content to ChatGPT and other products of OpenAI.
-
As per blog posts published by OpenAI and Reddit, the partnership will benefit the user communities of both companies.
-
In addition to bringing Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products built by OpenAI, users will be able to discover and engage with Reddit communities.
-
This will be done by accessing Reddit’s Data API, which “provides real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit”, allowing OpenAI tools to better understand and showcase Reddit content, including recent topics.
-
On the flip side, Reddit will be able to bring new AI-powered features to redditors and mods (moderators), while “Reddit will be building on OpenAI’s platform of AI models to bring its powerful vision to life.”
-
Additionally, OpenAI will become a Reddit advertising partner.
-
Reddit clarified that the partnership aligns with other content arrangements and doesn’t affect Reddit’s Data API Terms of Developer Terms, which prevents content accessed through its API being used for commercial purposes without Reddit’s approval.
-
Ahead of this, OpenAI also mentioned that Sam Altman is a shareholder in Reddit, while the partnership was led by OpenAI’s COO (Brad Lightcap) and was approved by its independent Board of Directors.
-
As per the blog post, “Keeping the internet open is crucial, and part of being open means Reddit content needs to be accessible to those fostering human learning and researching ways to build community, belonging, and empowerment online.”
-
[Contd.] “Reddit is a uniquely large and vibrant community that has long been an important space for conversation on the internet. Additionally, using LLMs, ML, and AI allow Reddit to improve the user experience for everyone.”

What Did Stakeholders Say?
-
Brad Lightcap, OpenAI COO, said, “We are thrilled to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with uniquely timely and relevant information, and to explore the possibilities to enrich the Reddit experience with AI-powered features.”
-
Steve Huffman, Reddit Co-Founder and CEO, said, “Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up to date human conversations about anything and everything.
-
[Contd.] “Including it in ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more of what they’re looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit.”
Do you think OpenAI’s partnership with Reddit will allow it to customize ChatGPT and other products better? Do you think OpenAI’s rivals need to make similar moves?
