OpenAI is taking another major step beyond chatbot-style assistance with ChatGPT Work, a new GPT-5.6-powered agent designed to turn complex business goals into finished documents, presentations, websites, and multi-step workflows.
The AI model reportedly delayed over national security concerns is now powering OpenAI’s biggest push to make advanced coding capabilities useful for people who do not code.
ChatGPT Work brings Codex into ChatGPT so professionals can create documents, presentations, spreadsheets, websites and web apps from a single goal. The launch puts OpenAI directly against Anthropic’s Claude Cowork and Microsoft’s Copilot Cowork as competition intensifies for enterprise customers seeking autonomous AI agents.
TL;DR
- ChatGPT Work combines ChatGPT and Codex to complete projects across apps, files and workflows.
- GPT-5.6 powers the service, which can operate for hours and carry context across tasks.
- Access starts with Pro, Enterprise and Edu users before expanding to Plus and Business.
ChatGPT Work Brings Codex Capabilities To Non-Coders
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Work as an agent that can move beyond answering questions and produce finished materials. Users can ask it to analyze a month-end budget variance, prepare for a sales meeting, turn research into a campaign brief or build assets for multiple markets while preserving context.
The service can gather information across connected apps and files, divide projects into smaller steps and continue working for hours. Users can monitor progress, answer questions, redirect tasks and approve important actions.
“ChatGPT Work is an agent that can take action across your apps and files, stay with a project for hours if needed, and turn a goal into finished work,” OpenAI said.
GPT-5.6 Powers OpenAI’s Enterprise AI Agent Push
ChatGPT Work is powered by GPT-5.6, OpenAI’s latest frontier model, which the company says improves reasoning across multi-step tasks and creates materials that follow templates and reference files.
OpenAI also said more than 5 million people use Codex weekly, including over 1 million who use it outside software development.
That shift helps explain why OpenAI is packaging coding technology as a broader workplace tool. The company says nearly every internal team, including finance and sales, now uses ChatGPT Work and Codex.
In finance, OpenAI reported that the agent reduced month-end close and forecasting from days to hours by finding source data, moving it into Excel or Sheets, reconciling figures, creating slides and checking results. In sales, it turned a discovery conversation into a tailored proof of concept within 24 hours, a process OpenAI said normally takes weeks.

ChatGPT Work Challenges Claude Cowork For Enterprise Users
The product arrives as OpenAI and Anthropic compete for business customers. Anthropic launched Claude Cowork in January, while OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT Work as a broader agent spanning documents, presentations, websites and scheduled workflows.
Early users cited productivity gains. RingCentral said the system helped one manager expand support from one product manager to roughly 50. Zapier used it to review thousands of leads and identify seven figures in potential sales, while NVIDIA replaced an event-planning spreadsheet process that consumed about 40% of pre-event preparation time.
ChatGPT Work will roll out to Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, followed by Plus and Business customers.
