OpenAI Enters The Search Engine Sector With SearchGPT
Updated on Fri, Jul 26, 2024
Since then, the market has filled up with a wide range of GenAI chatbots offering the same functionality, as well as being used for other purposes.
However, there was one big issue that was observed in these tools. Hallucinations. Chatbots would create fake scenarios and cite them, while trying to pass them off as genuine instances. In numerous cases, lawyers have used ChatGPT and inadvertently cited fake cases.
Enter SearchGPT, a generative AI-powered search engine, OpenAI’s newest product offers users answers to their questions by citing genuine sources and sharing source information, in a way that rivals Google’s search engine.
So, let’s explore what OpenAI’s new product, SearchGPT, is all about!
What Is SearchGPT?
-
Through a news release published on its website, OpenAI announced that it has launched SearchGPT, which offers users “a new way to search.”
-
SearchGPT is a new AI search feature that’s similar to Google’s search engine but uses OpenAI’s question-and-answer style to generate high quality answers.
-
It’s designed to produce fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources by combining the power of OpenAI’s AI models with information from the internet.
-
The platform will provide up-to-date information with links to relevant sources and allow users to ask follow-up questions and converse with SearchGPT just as they would with a person.
-
Its responses come with clear, in-line, named attribution and links offering users clarity on where the information is coming from and engage with more results in a sidebar.
-
SearchGPT helps users connect with publishers by prominently citing and linking to them in search results.
-
This boosts OpenAI’s commitment to build a thriving ecosystem of publishers and creators and builds on numerous partnerships with publishers such as TIME, Reddit, BuzzFeed, Axel Springer, News Corp, Opera Press and many others.
-
Currently, SearchGPT is being released as a prototype for a small group of users and publishers to test and offer feedback. Users interested in trying out the feature can sign up for the waitlist.
-
“Getting answers on the web can take a lot of effort, often requiring multiple attempts to get relevant results,” reads the release.
-
“We believe that by enhancing the conversational capabilities of our models with real-time information from the web, finding what you’re looking for can be faster and easier.”
What Did Publishers And Creators Say?
-
Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, said, “AI search is going to become one of the key ways that people navigate the internet, and it's crucial, in these early days, that the technology is built in a way that values, respects, and protects journalism and publishers.”
-
[Contd.] “We look forward to partnering with OpenAI in the process, and creating a new way for readers to discover The Atlantic.”
-
Robert Thomson, CEO of News Corp, said, “Sam and the truly talented team at OpenAI innately understand that for AI-powered search to be effective, it must be founded on the highest-quality, most reliable information furnished by trusted sources.”
-
[Contd.] “For the heavens to be in equilibrium, the relationship between technology and content must be symbiotic and provenance must be protected.”
With Google’s search engine enjoying around 90% of the search engine market share, do you think SearchGPT will be able to challenge Google and other search engines such as Yahoo and OpenAI-backer Microsoft’s Bing?
Do you think the question-and-answer style being offered by SearchGPT is a better technique than traditional searching styles?
