OnePlus & OpenAI Aim To Reshape Consumer Interactions With AI-powered Devices

Well, you’re not the only one!
With so much happening in our digital lives every day, most of us just want technology that makes life easier—without extra steps or downloading yet another app.
With that in mind, two of the biggest names in the industry are trying to solve these problems in their own ways.
OpenAI made waves by onboarding iconic Apple designer Jony Ive, but now details about its collaborative top-secret AI device have been leaked—and it’s already stirring debate over whether it's visionary or... just wearable déjà vu.
Further, leading smartphone manufacturer OnePlus revealed a series of AI features aimed at transforming how we interact with our smartphones.
So, without further ado, let’s unpack both these major announcements!
What Is OnePlus’ AI Plus Mind?
At the OnePlus AI event, the brand unveiled ‘AI Plus Mind’, a next-gen AI feature designed to combat information overload by saving contextually relevant on-screen data to a dedicated ‘Mind Space’.
It debuts on the upcoming OnePlus 13s smartphone in Asia and will later roll out to OnePlus 13 devices globally. It leverages OnePlus’ new customizable hardware button, the Plus Key, which is set to replace the classic Alert Slider.
Users can press the Plus Key (or swipe with three fingers on older models) to capture information, such as schedules, event invites, or articles, and then let AI Plus Mind extract, categorize, and even auto-sync it to tools like your calendar.
According to Arthur Lam, Director of OxygenOS and AI Strategy at OnePlus, in an interview with TechRadar says, “How do we use AI to organise our mind, capture it, process it, and empower the user to do different things? I think that was the starting point. That's why you see us using the Plus Key, and we believe that this is not a software-only solution; it's a hardware-software solution; that makes it uniquely OnePlus.”
Unlike standard screenshot tools, AI Plus Mind interprets the context of what’s on screen and suggests what to do next. For example, if you snap a restaurant reservation, it could extract the time and date, add it to your calendar, and set a reminder automatically.
The Plus Key acts as a shortcut hub, and OnePlus suggests it could eventually become a standard across all future models. However, that’s not all OnePlus announced!
What Else Did OnePlus Announce?
Along with this headline innovation, OnePlus revealed a few more upcoming AI features, such as:
-
AI VoiceScribe: Automatically records, summarizes, and translates calls or meetings across video and messaging apps.
-
AI Call Assistant (India only): Offers real-time call translation and call summaries directly from the OnePlus Dialer.
-
AI Translation App: Unifies text, voice, camera, and screen translation into one simple experience.
-
AI Search: Lets users ask natural language questions and search through device files, notes, and settings seamlessly—integrated tightly with AI Plus Mind.
-
AI Reframe: Suggests new photo compositions by analyzing the subject and background.
-
AI Best Face 2.0: Enhances group photos with up to 20 people by fixing closed eyes or poor expressions—even from images taken on other phones.
With OnePlus making strides in simplifying consumer hardware with AI integration, the focus is on another AI giant–that has never developed a hardware product before.
What’s Happening With OpenAI And Jony Ive’s Lab?
In what might be the strangest AI leak of 2025, OpenAI and former Apple design legend Jony Ive are reportedly building a wearable AI device that looks suspiciously like an iPod Shuffle on a string.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo describes the prototype as screenless, slightly larger than the defunct Humane AI Pin, and meant to be worn around the neck. The report goes on to suggest that it will feature cameras and microphones for environmental awareness.
The project, under development after OpenAI’s acquisition of Ive’s hardware company 'LoveFrom' for $6.5 billion, aims for mass production by 2027.
It’s expected to act as a "third core device" beyond phones and laptops, potentially signaling a shift from screen-based devices to ambient AI experiences. Industry insiders also suggest the timing of the OpenAI–Tony Ive announcement may be a tactical move to divert attention from Google I/O 2025's showcase of major AI upgrades across Gemini and Android.
While details are scarce, some see this device as part of a larger trend toward “physical AI”—bringing artificial intelligence into ambient, wearable, or embedded forms.
Still, critics argue it may simply be a dressed-up version of the Humane AI Pin (which was a rousing failure), raising questions about whether OpenAI is leading innovation or creating hype.
So, with all that’s happening, do you think OnePlus’ AI Plus Mind and OpenAI’s mysterious AI device will redefine AI-powered consumer hardware?
